6 things to do to avoid getting sick in cold weather

VnExpressVnExpress03/01/2024

Wash your hands regularly, clean and disinfect surfaces in your home, and get a flu vaccine to boost your immunity and prevent minor illnesses.

Many people are susceptible to colds, flu causing cough, fever and runny nose when the weather changes. Germs spread more easily in confined spaces such as homes and offices. Some of the following ways can help strengthen the immune system, making the body healthier.

Wash your hands regularly: Bacteria and viruses can easily enter your body when you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. Wash your hands before eating or preparing food, after using the toilet, and after coming home from outside. Wash your hands under clean running water for at least 20 seconds, paying attention to washing between your fingers and under your fingernails. Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol in your workplace, car, and bag for use when needed.

Cleaning surfaces : Cleaning and disinfecting hard surfaces like countertops, refrigerator handles, doorknobs, and faucets can help prevent the spread of germs when someone is sick in the home. They can also cling to TV remotes, computers, laptops, and phones. Use a disinfectant or soft wipe to clean regularly.

Avoid sharing personal items with sick people: Cold and flu germs can stick to fabrics and objects such as water cups, toothbrushes, hand towels, bath towels, etc. When someone in the house is sick, instead of using cloth hand towels, use paper towels, and do not share personal items. If possible, let the sick person sleep in a separate room to sleep and relax.

Boost the immune system: A healthy immune system helps the body avoid minor illnesses. Eat lots of fruit. Fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in vitamin A (sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach), vitamin C (citrus fruits) and vitamin E (almonds, sunflower seeds). Lean proteins such as seafood, eggs and beans help boost the body's defenses. Getting enough sleep, exercising daily, managing stress and limiting alcohol consumption also have similar effects.

Flu shot: The immune system's two lines of defense are the innate and adaptive immune systems. The innate defenses are less specific because they respond the same way to all foreign invaders. If this mechanism fails to counter a threat, the adaptive immune system takes over.

Vaccination is one of the best ways to support immunity. It significantly reduces the risk of infection by working with the innate immune system to form antibodies against pathogens.

Wear a mask: Everyone should choose a mask that fits and is comfortable for them. Wear a mask when going out, going to public places or coming into contact with sick people or epidemic areas to prevent the spread of pathogens.

People with mild symptoms should use tissues to wipe, cough or sneeze instead of their hands; limit contact with people in the house, especially those with weak immune systems.
