On July 24, in response to a reporter's question asking about Vietnam's reaction to the tense developments in the border area between Cambodia and Thailand, Vietnamese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said: "Vietnam expresses concern about the current tense developments in the border area between Thailand and Cambodia."
Emphasizing that Thailand and Cambodia are neighbors of each other and of Vietnam as well as being ASEAN members, Ms. Pham Thu Hang stated that the most important thing now is that the two sides exercise utmost restraint, do not use force, do not let tensions escalate, peacefully and satisfactorily resolve disagreements on the basis of fundamental principles of international law, the United Nations Charter, the ASEAN Charter, the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) and in the spirit of ASEAN friendship and solidarity, for the long-term interests of both sides and the region.
On the morning of July 24, armed clashes broke out in provinces along the Thai-Cambodian border as the two countries used heavy weapons to attack each other. The cross-border attacks left several civilians dead. Thailand downgraded diplomatic relations with Cambodia after accusing its neighbor of planting landmines in the disputed area, injuring a Thai soldier. Cambodia responded by downgrading diplomatic relations with Thailand to the lowest level and recalling all diplomatic staff in Bangkok.
