The positive and important role of VNA in the Vietnamese press system

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) (September 15, 1945 - September 15, 2025), Ms. Sokmom Nimul, Director General of the Cambodian News Agency (AKP), had an interview with VNA reporters in Phnom Penh, revolving around the role of the national news agency in the Vietnamese revolutionary press system, as well as promoting mutual understanding between the Vietnamese people and the world through the media, especially with the Cambodian people.

- Vietnam has just celebrated the 100th anniversary of Vietnam's revolutionary press day and the 80th anniversary of National Day September 2. In your opinion, what role does VNA play in the Vietnamese revolutionary press system, as well as promoting mutual understanding between the Vietnamese people and other countries through the media , especially with the people in the neighboring country of Cambodia ?

Ms. Sokmom Nimul, Director General of AKP: Since its establishment on September 15, 1945, VNA has always played the role of the official voice of the Party and State of Vietnam, in conveying the policies, statements, decisions, and viewpoints of the Party and State of Vietnam to all classes of Vietnamese people. VNA also plays the role of gathering and mobilizing people to participate in the struggle to liberate the country from colonialism, and to participate in protecting, building and developing Vietnam.

VNA also plays the role of a messenger, conveying messages to the international community about the practical situation in Vietnam, the struggle and viewpoints of the Party and State of Vietnam.

We also see another important role of VNA in bridging the gap between the Vietnamese people and other peoples in the world, especially the Cambodian people. Through the cooperation activities between VNA and AKP, our two news agencies have done very well, effectively playing the role of a bridge between the people of Vietnam and Cambodia.

Another point of interest to me is VNA's dissemination and provision of information in the Khmer language. This is important in promoting mutual understanding between the people of the two countries. Through VNA's Khmer language information products, Cambodian people can directly receive information without having to go through translation.

- In your opinion, what are the notable milestones in the cooperation activities between VNA and AKP? Which areas have been most effective ?

Ms. Sokmom Nimul, General Director of AKP: AKP was re-established in late 1978, then called SPK, born from nothing, from scratch. And VNA has supported AKP in all aspects, spiritually, materially, technically, professionally... That is the valuable and precious point in the relationship, as well as the cooperation activities between the two agencies.

In the areas of cooperation between the two companies, I think human resource training is the most effective area of cooperation. Because as mentioned, AKP today or SPK before started from scratch, VNA helped train human resources by sending experts to Cambodia, supporting professional training in Vietnam, exchanging visits, learning experiences, helping us gradually build a strong human resource, capable of standing on our own and maintaining it until today.

- Based on the good traditional relationship between AKP and VNA, what do you expect about the cooperation prospects between the two national news agencies in the coming time? What are the contents that the two sides need to focus on to further strengthen cooperation ?

Ms. Sokmom Nimul, General Director of AKP: Regarding the prospects for cooperation between the two agencies, I think that both sides need to promote the existing foundation, continue to consolidate and enhance cooperation priorities based on their strengths. In particular, it is important to pay attention to doing better and more effectively the role of a solid bridge between the two peoples of Cambodia and Vietnam, through the exchange and dissemination of authentic, timely and accurate information of each agency. At the same time, continue the fight against fake news and toxic information created by bad elements, affecting the relationship between the two countries.

In addition, we can coordinate the production of general information topics related to the fields of culture, tourism ..., helping people of the two countries understand each other better, as well as participate in cooperation activities, sharing information at the regional level related to topics on climate change, drug prevention, online fraud...

In addition, in the context of strong technological development as today, we can organize training and professional exchange activities to enhance technological expertise, helping to produce, publish, transmit and disseminate information more quickly and widely.

On the AKP side, we are also very interested in the exchange of information and documents between the two national news agencies, especially photo documents.

- On this occasion, what message do you have to send to VNA, a traditional partner that has been with AKP since its inception?

Ms. Sokmom Nimul, General Director of AKP: On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of VNA, once again, I would like to send to Ms. Vu Viet Trang, General Director of VNA and all colleagues my best wishes for good health and continued success on the road ahead.

With its proud history, I believe that VNA will continue to play the role of a reliable information platform for generations of Vietnamese publics, as well as continue to be a strong and effective bridge between the people of Vietnam and Cambodia.
