Rare lull in interest rate market

Bank interest rates today September 10, 2025, are deposit interest rates still attractive to depositors when very few banks have changed their deposit interest rate tables in recent times?

Báo Hải PhòngBáo Hải Phòng10/09/2025

Interest rates mobilized in the domestic market continued to remain unchanged in recent days.

Since the beginning of August, only An Binh Bank (ABBank) has officially adjusted its deposit interest rates by announcing a 0.1%/year reduction for all deposit terms from 1-60 months.

Some banks have adjusted "cautiously" by giving depositors additional interest rates, but for a limited time and with mandatory conditions.

In August, MB Bank offered an additional 0.3%/year savings interest rate for customers with 1-6 month terms; Techcombank added an additional 0.5%/year savings interest rate for customers with 3, 6, and 12 month terms; Eximbank announced the expansion of its "Combo Casa" savings product with online deposits, with the highest savings interest rate being 6%/year for 18-36 month terms applicable to Infinite customers.

In September, Vikki Bank announced an additional 0.4%/year interest rate on deposits from September 3 to September 30 for customers over 80 years old, and from September 3 to December 31 for customers in the armed forces.

According to the State Bank's statistics on the currency market in the most recent week, from September 3-5, the State Bank withdrew a net VND30,725 billion on the OMO channel. Specifically, through the term purchase service, the State Bank injected more than VND49,429 billion (terms of 7 days, 14 days, 28 days, interest rate of 4%/year), while VND80,154 billion issued previously had matured.

In the past two weeks, the State Bank has resumed net withdrawal activities, but on a rather modest scale. To date, there are still about VND150,000 billion in circulation on the OMO channel. The net withdrawal is mainly through passive maturity, while the State Bank has stopped issuing treasury bills since July.

According to BVSC Securities Company, this shows that the management agency still wants to maintain liquidity in the system, supporting credit growth and the economy . In general, the monetary policy of the State Bank in recent times has been flexible, both supporting exchange rate stability and ensuring liquidity of the banking system.

Meanwhile, overnight, 1-week, and 2-week interbank interest rates increased again to 4.7%/year; 4.8%/year, and 5.13%/year, respectively. The increase in interest rates somewhat helped reduce pressure on the exchange rate.

The big news in major economies is that the European Central Bank (ECB) is expected to keep interest rates unchanged at its meeting this Thursday. The hawkish stance at its July meeting, the EU-US trade deal and better-than-expected economic data have all dampened expectations for further policy easing.

Markets now see only a 30% chance of the ECB cutting rates before December, while a Reuters poll found economists also believe the ECB will remain on hold through 2025.
