The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has offered technical assistance to Cambodia and Thailand to help protect and preserve cultural heritage sites potentially affected by recent military clashes along the two countries' shared border.
In a statement issued on July 30, quoted by a VNA correspondent in Phnom Penh, UNESCO said it is ready to assist Cambodia and Thailand in assessing damage, implementing protective measures and ensuring long-term protection of cultural heritages, including those recognized by UNESCO.
“UNESCO expresses its readiness to provide the necessary technical assistance to ensure the protection of the heritage, assess potential damage and take any necessary protective actions,” the statement said.
The proposal comes amid concerns that recent clashes may have damaged cultural heritage in both countries.
UNESCO has launched satellite monitoring of the affected areas and confirmed that a number of heritage sites, including world heritage sites, may have been affected.
To support protection efforts, UNESCO has shared the geographical coordinates of the sites with both Cambodia and Thailand, and reminded the two governments of their commitments under international conventions.
The organization called on both sides to uphold their obligations under the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Heritage in the Event of Armed Conflict and the 1972 Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
"Peace is an essential condition for the protection of cultural heritage," UNESCO stressed, welcoming the recent ceasefire agreement and calling on both sides to ensure that heritage sites are protected from further damage./.
