Three days after the gratitude ceremony organized by the Gifted High School (VNU-HCMC), Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh, former head of the school's math group, still had many lingering emotions.

Impromptu performance
Sharing with reporters on the morning of July 31, Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh said he was surprised by the level of sharing of the video . In the past few days, he has received many messages from students and colleagues asking about his health.
"It was a completely impromptu performance, without any prior preparation. At first, everyone planned to sing karaoke, then saw that there was a guitar so they improvised to play and sing to create a more intimate and closer atmosphere. Moreover, the guitar is also a part of our youth" - Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh shared.
Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh said this was not the first time he had played the piano in front of many people, but he was a bit shy because he had not prepared well. In previous years, on the occasion of November 20, Mr. Trinh and his students often had impromptu performances.
"The students sang the song "Chalk Dust" and I played the guitar for them. I didn't play the guitar well, but the class loved it and laughed all the time. Besides the stressful study moments, the students also need to relax. If I can, I still want to stick with my students" - Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh shared with a smile.

Students are my motivation!
Although retired, Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh will continue to accompany the Gifted High School as an advisor in the work of nurturing excellent students.
"I find joy in teaching, in each generation of my students. The only difference is that after retirement, I have more time to visit and teach in many provinces and cities than before. My students are my motivation, I will continue this work, as long as I am healthy" - Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh confided.
When asked about his plan to write a book, Mr. Trinh said that this is something that VNU-HCM is also very interested in. However, he has not been able to do it yet because he is not satisfied with the quality of the documents he has compiled.
Mr. Trinh confided: "I look back at the issues I have researched, for example, out of 10 issues, there are only about 3 that I am really satisfied with. The remaining issues need to be edited and perfected. I think, when everything is really good and I feel ready, I will start writing."
During his time working with the Gifted High School as a professional team leader, Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh led the math team to many outstanding achievements with 171 national excellent student awards and 19 international Olympic medals.

After more than 40 years of working together since studying together at the Mathematics Department of Moscow State University (Russia) until returning to Vietnam and working together under the same roof, Dr. Tran Nam Dung, Vice Principal of Gifted High School, commented that Mr. Trinh is a very modest, simple person with a sense of responsibility for his work.
"Mr. Trinh was my idol and many others when I was in school. Until now, he is still a legend of Vietnamese Mathematics and the Gifted High School" - Dr. Dung expressed.
Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh, born in 1962 in Hue , won the gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1979 and a special prize for the contestant with a unique solution.
To date, Dr. Trinh is the only Vietnamese person to receive this award. Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh officially retired from March 2025.
