Parents protest against school year fees

Previously, this parent shared that he was very surprised to receive a notice from the homeroom teacher assigning parents to be on duty in the classroom at 5:00 p.m. every day.

"The teacher said that first graders have difficulty cleaning their classrooms, so some classes spend 500,000 VND/month to hire school janitors to clean. If the class does not hire janitors, the teacher will assign parents to come and clean the classrooms.

Furthermore, I think that cleaning the classroom, including sweeping the classroom or washing the blackboard, watering the plants, sweeping the hallway... students can completely do it to practice self-discipline, discipline and responsibility to the community. I do not agree with hiring someone to do this work for the children," this parent said.

Parents were also upset, stating that right from the beginning of the school year, when registering their children for classes, the school gave them options such as: classes with air conditioning and classes without air conditioning. However, even though they had registered their children for classes with air conditioning, at the beginning of the school year, the parents were informed by the school that the first grade class would support 10 new air conditioners, with each student expected to pay 300,000 VND.

In addition, at the meeting, parents were informed about the donation of an artificial turf field to the school in the second semester, with an estimated amount of 100,000 VND/student. This is a voluntary socialized amount, and cannot be equalized for each student.

"After the meeting, I sent my opinion disagreeing with the call for donations of air conditioners and a soccer field. The next morning, I received a call from the school principal. The principal said that the school agreed that my child's class did not support it, but if my child's class did not support it tomorrow, the school would have the security guard remove the two air conditioners that the students were using. Because these air conditioners were donated by upperclassmen," said this parent.

Regarding the feedback from parents at Ngo Thi Nham Primary School (Thanh Tri District, Hanoi ), speaking with Dan Viet Newspaper reporter, Mr. Pham Van Ngat, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Thanh Tri District, said: "We have grasped the feedback from parents and have verified and clarified. The draft content of the parents and classes to ask for the school's opinion in the first meeting of the year is currently being discussed, the school and the classes have not yet collected any money."

Mr. Ngát also added: "If any parent does not agree, they can frankly present everything to the homeroom teacher and the school. If the school deliberately does not listen to the opinions of the parents and still does wrong, they must take responsibility."

What does the school say?

Explaining the above concerns of parents, Ms. Hoang Thi Thu Ha, Principal of Ngo Thi Nham Primary School (Thanh Tri District, Hanoi) said that up to this point, the school has not implemented any early-year collection but is still in the process of collecting opinions.

"The school has the idea of socialization according to Circular 16, but is still in the process of collecting opinions. We will do it as much as we can, not level the playing field or mobilize parents to build a soccer field for their children," said Ms. Ha.

In addition, Ms. Ha also admitted that the homeroom teacher's assignment of parents to be on duty in the classroom was incorrect. The female principal shared that this was not the school's policy. "In previous school years, some parents said that the students were too young to be on duty, so the parents' committee of each class spent 500,000 VND/month to hire someone to clean the classroom. This was an agreement between the parents and the cleaner, not a school policy.

Assigning parents to be on duty in class is not correct. We will ask for a report and remind the teachers. From this school year, I also require 100% of the classes to have students do the cleaning themselves, no hiring anyone to do it."

Regarding the issue of calling on parents to support 10 new air conditioners, Ms. Ha said that this year the school has 10 air conditioners for grades 4 and 5 that have been broken for 4-5 years. The broken air conditioners were removed and stored in the warehouse and cannot be repaired. This is still just a policy in the process of mobilizing parents. The school has not yet collected these fees.

The principal also informed that the school and the parents who reported the incident had met, discussed, and now understand each other.

It is known that after the long reflection, the parent deleted his post on social networks.
