South Korea's military said on February 13 it was ready to "strongly" respond to any provocations by North Korea as Pyongyang escalated tensions through a series of new weapons tests.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it detected and monitored North Korea's test on the afternoon of February 11 in real time and is analyzing the technical specifications of the artillery with the US.
"Our military maintains a posture that can strongly respond to North Korea's artillery provocations while constantly monitoring the country's weapons development and enhancing our military's deterrence and response capabilities," JCS spokesman Colonel Lee Sung-jun said at a regular press briefing on February 13.
Mr. Lee said the military did not immediately release the information because multi-barrel artillery did not fall within the category of weapons that require immediate warning.
North Korea said on February 12 that it has developed a 240 mm guided artillery gun for use with multiple rocket launchers to further expand its military arsenal.
According to military sources, North Korea conducted a test of 240 mm artillery shells in an area near the western port city of Nampho on February 11.
