“May this new presidential term be a period of peace , prosperity, equality and new democracy,” said Maduro, who has been president since 2013, adding that he would convene a commission to reform the constitution. The Venezuelan government said about 2,000 guests from 125 countries attended the inauguration.

Mr. Maduro was declared the winner of the presidential election in July 2024 by Venezuela's electoral authorities, but the opposition has argued that opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia was the winner. Several countries do not recognize Mr. Maduro's victory.

Immediately after the inauguration of the Venezuelan president, the US President Joe Biden administration moved to increase the reward from 15 million USD to 25 million USD for those who provide information that could lead to the arrest or conviction of Mr. Maduro on drug trafficking charges.

Washington indicted Maduro and several others on drug and corruption charges in 2020, charges that Maduro denies. The Venezuelan president’s administration has also rejected European sanctions against Venezuelan officials, saying Western countries are using illegal methods to cripple Venezuela.
