South Korean President Speaks Out After Arrest

(Dan Tri) - South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said he agreed to appear before the investigation agency under an arrest warrant because he wanted to avoid the risk of bloodshed, and affirmed that the investigation against him was "illegal".

"To prevent an unfortunate incident and violence, I decided to appear before the Corruption Investigation Office with the Chief Official (CIO) even though I believe the investigation is illegal," South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said in a short video recorded at his private residence in Seoul on the morning of January 15 before being arrested by the investigation agency.

On the morning of January 15, CIO prosecutors, assisted by about 3,000 police officers and South Korean Defense Ministry personnel, executed a second arrest warrant against President Yoon after the first attempt failed.

Investigators arrested President Yoon on charges of rebellion after declaring martial law on December 3. The incident marked the first time a sitting South Korean president had been arrested.

Mr. Yoon, 64, appeared at the CIO headquarters in Gyeonggi Province for questioning. For the next 48 hours, he will be detained at the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, Kyunggi Province, about 16km south of the presidential palace.
