The entourage of ousted President Mohamed Bazoum confirmed on August 12 that he had seen doctors, amid growing concerns about the politician 's health.

Mr Bazoum has been detained since members of the presidential guard carried out a coup late last month.

According to a member of Mr. Bazoum's entourage, the ousted president of Niger “was examined by a doctor,” bringing food to him and his family “today (August 12).” Currently, Mr. Bazoum's health condition is stable.

The European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU), among others, have sounded the alarm over Bazoum’s situation, while the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk cited reports that Bazoum’s detention conditions “may constitute inhumane treatment and a violation of international human rights law.”

Human Rights Watch (HRW) said it spoke to Mr Bazoum earlier this week. HRW quoted Mr Bazoum as describing the treatment he and his family had been subjected to as “inhumane and cruel”.

Previously on July 26, soldiers in Niger overthrew President Bazoum and detained him in the Presidential Palace, while closing the border and declaring a nationwide curfew.

On July 28, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, head of the Presidential Guard since 2011, declared himself the new leader of the African nation during the transition period and warned that any foreign military intervention would lead to chaos./.
