World Court rejects most of Ukraine's lawsuit against Russia

However, in a similar ruling, judges at the UN's highest court found that Russia had violated an anti-discrimination treaty by failing to support Ukrainian-language education in Crimea after annexing the peninsula in 2014.

The court also rejected Ukraine's request to order compensation for both allegations and only ordered Russia to comply with the treaties.

Ukraine filed a lawsuit with the ICJ, also known as the World Court, in 2017, accusing Russia of violating an anti-terrorism treaty by supporting separatists in eastern Ukraine. During a court hearing in The Hague last June, Russia dismissed Ukraine's accusations as fictitious and a "blatant lie."

In a case that has dragged on for nearly seven years, Kiev accuses Russia of supporting separatist forces that shot down flight MH17 in July 2014, killing all 298 passengers and crew.

In November 2022, a Dutch court sentenced two Russians and a Ukrainian in absentia to life in prison for their roles in the disaster.

The World Court's rulings are final and not subject to appeal, but the UN body has no mechanism to enforce its rulings.
