Social network TikTok has just announced new safety and mental health features for teens and families when using the platform, which are considered a series of useful features in the Family Pairing toolkit.
According to TikTok representatives, this toolkit helps parents and guardians customize their children's experience on the platform in a flexible and appropriate way.
This is an important first step to fostering healthy conversations between parents and children about how to interact and connect safely in digital environments.
In its latest update, TikTok introduced a series of upgraded features in "Smart Family" to help parents better understand their children's account activity.
Notably, in this update, TikTok has upgraded the tool that shows the list of accounts that teens have blocked. Now, this tool allows parents to directly block specific accounts that they deem inappropriate for their children.
When an account is blocked, that user will not be able to interact with the teen and content from that account will not appear in their feed. Teens can still request to have it unblocked, but the final decision will be made by the parent.

One of the features currently in beta is a notification that will notify parents when their teen posts a public video, photo, or story. It will allow parents and teens to have an open dialogue about what content to share publicly, without stifling their creativity or independence.
The platform has also added a feature that allows parents to see the privacy choices their 16- and 17-year-olds have made, such as allowing others to download videos or using Duet and Stitch. For users aged 13-15, these options are disabled by default and cannot be changed.

The Manage Topics feature is also being introduced for the first time, allowing users to adjust the frequency of content displayed across more than 10 popular topic groups - from art, travel, nature to sports .
With this feature, the platform allows parents to see the topics their teen (13-19 years old) children have chosen to shape their feed.
TikTok representatives said the platform has heard from teens that they want adults to take an interest in their digital lives and acknowledge how important it is to them.
With better visibility into content preferences, families can connect over topics they care about on TikTok, as well as the content and creators that excite and inspire the whole family.
