The special teacher and the lessons without a curriculum

No one knows exactly when the seed of music was planted in the heart of the young boy Bui Tuan Ngoc. It could have been from the few times he visited his father, a Border Guard officer, and from the time he ate and slept with the people in the border area, leaving many emotions in the heart of the boy born in 2000. Or in his free time, his father often liked to listen to him sing “Nhanh Lan Rung”.

When he was in high school, Ngoc taught himself to play the piano and practiced composing, and his father was the one who judged each note: “You should press the last beat lightly, a little slower…” - his father’s gentle advice followed him throughout his years of study and work. And so, Ngoc’s first teacher - not a famous artist, nor a music conservatory lecturer, but his father - was the one who nurtured his passion for music with love and a delicate sense of music.

Senior Lieutenant Bui Tuan Ngoc.

One night, after long days of work, even though he was tired, he still patiently sat and listened to his son play. Ngoc was so passionate about playing that he forgot about time. Looking up at the clock at 3am, he saw his father had fallen asleep. The love of music, the love of the soldier's uniform - it all started from those moments, from the small porch, from the sound of an old guitar and from the quiet heart of a father. That's why, "country and family are always the foundation of humanity, the material for my later songs" - Ngoc shared.

On the road of two colors

The first time Ngoc stood on stage was at a school-level performance night when he was in 10th grade. The stage lights made Ngoc tremble, but that pivotal moment opened a new door. Winning the first prize in the school-level competition was like the first recognition - that he had the ability to go further. From then on, he diligently studied on his own, composed, and then participated in organizing charity activities.

At that time, Ngoc also joined the school's guitar club and with two friends founded the Com band, in which Ngoc was the lead singer. Also since his student days, Ngoc started practicing writing his first songs. In 2016, Ngoc and the Com band made a MV for this first song called "Thu Cho", which received a lot of shares from Quang Ninh youth.

Bui Tuan Ngoc participated in many tours, performing defense and international foreign affairs tasks.

In 2017, the family's joy was multiplied when Ngoc passed the entrance exam to the Military University of Culture and Arts - a place that could help him pursue his artistic dream while still keeping the ideal of a soldier's uniform in his heart.

In his early days at the Military University of Culture and Arts, Ngoc was quite quiet. He was gentle, quiet, and did not stand out from the crowd, but he was always attentive in every class. When his friends were on lunch break, Ngoc went to the school grounds to practice his voice. After school, Ngoc stayed in the practice room for hours, cherishing every note. And that young man, with his strong will, trained himself and taught himself how to restrain his emotions and maintain discipline in every rhythm.

People's Artist, Colonel Ha Thuy - who has guided many generations of artists - always remembers that student: "There is something very strange about Tuan Ngoc. He does not reveal much, but his voice contains a special inner strength. Like smoldering ashes, just waiting for a breeze to flare up". Ngoc is the first intermediate Vocal Music student of the school to be suggested as a scientific topic. And the scientific topic successfully defended is an affirmation of Ngoc's right choice.

In 2021, Tuan Ngoc graduated as valedictorian of the 38th class of the Vocal Music Department, officially donning the two colors of artist and soldier. That was also the time when he understood that being a soldier was the choice of ideals. And being an artist in the military environment - it was an honor, but also a journey that required seriousness and standards down to every note.

Storyteller with melody

Joining the Music and Dance Theater - where there are many veteran artists, the invisible pressure is also the "barrier" that he sets for himself, urging his dedication to burn more and more. More surprisingly, after a short time, he was elected as the Secretary of the Youth Union of the theater - the youngest Secretary of the Youth Union in the whole army at that time. This is also the time when Tuan Ngoc can freely promote his youth and creativity.

Bui Tuan Ngoc wants to use his voice to convey messages about solidarity and the desire for peace.

Like a black pearl hidden under layers of rough soil, Tuan Ngoc not only “burns” himself out as a singer, he also demonstrates his unlimited composing ability. Nearly 30 out of his 50 compositions have been “released”.

Each song of the young singer sparkles with the colors of dedication, patriotism and the ideals of a soldier. The songs are not complicated in structure, not noisy with effects, but it is the simplicity and rusticity that makes listeners remember forever. Because, from the materials of daily life, he carefully and meticulously chooses each lyric to write songs about Uncle Ho's soldiers, homeland and country with gentle and smooth melodies.

Songs: Excellent in 2023. Excellent in 2024. Won First Prize in the composition contest to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the province's founding. Many of his songs have won awards and made an impression on social media platforms.

Continuing the beautiful story of the special friendship between Vietnam and Laos

Active in all activities, skillfully combining professional duties and Youth Union work, Ngoc has inspired many young people through volunteer activities, implementing Youth Union activities in tours and cultural exchanges with many creative and effective ways both domestically and internationally.

During his tours, performing foreign defense and international missions, Bui Tuan Ngoc always leaves special impressions, from Cuba, Morocco, Hungary, India, Laos, etc. Every time Tuan Ngoc sings, the beautiful country of Vietnam appears vividly in the eyes of international friends.

In particular, with his positive contributions to the friendship between the two countries, singer and musician Bui Tuan Ngoc was elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam-Laos Friendship Association, term V, 2023-2028. Tuan Ngoc said that this is not only a personal honor, but also an opportunity for the younger generation to join hands to continue the tradition of close ties between the two brotherly nations of Vietnam and Laos.

With his positive contributions to the friendship between Vietnam and Laos, singer and musician Bui Tuan Ngoc was elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam-Laos Friendship Association, term V, 2023-2028.

Ngoc confided: “Over the past half century, the Vietnam-Laos relationship has become a shining symbol of special friendship. As an artist, I believe that music is a language without borders, a bridge connecting the hearts of two nations. I wish to use my voice to convey messages of solidarity, of the desire for peace and common development between Vietnam and Laos.”

Ms. Kham-Phao On-Tha-Van, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Lao PDR to Vietnam, said impressively: “Bui Tuan Ngoc is not only a talented artist with a powerful voice but also a cultural ambassador. I feel the respect and deep affection that he has for the country and people of Laos through the songs he has composed and performed. I also highly appreciate the role of the Army Music and Dance Theater - an important bridge contributing to fostering and strengthening the special solidarity and friendship between Laos and Vietnam through art exchange programs”.

Behind the applause and the sparkling stage lights are the nights Ngoc practiced until his voice was hoarse. These were the moments when he quietly returned to his small room, opened old recordings, listened to them over and over again to find the necessary touchpoint for a new song. And above all, he is still a storyteller through melody. A soldier with an artist's heart, or an artist with a soldier's ideal - it is difficult to distinguish. All we know is that, where that voice rises, people feel a pure, deep, loyal and complete soul with the chosen ideal.

Colonel, People's Artist Nguyen Thi Bich Hanh (Hong Hanh), Director of the Army Song and Dance Theater emphasized: "As a young artist-soldier of the Army Song and Dance Theater, Senior Lieutenant Bui Tuan Ngoc has composed and performed many songs on the theme of Uncle Ho's soldiers, revolutionary war and the homeland, country and people of Vietnam with smooth, gentle lyrics, imbued with patriotism. Tuan Ngoc is an outstanding individual, which affirms the talent and effective continuation of the tradition of the generation of young artists-soldiers of the Army Song and Dance Theater, a typical, proud, enthusiastic young generation, daring to think, daring to do, wholeheartedly contributing in the new era of development of the Vietnamese nation".
