Meritorious Artist Van Hai, producer of the private Le Ngoc theater, shared: Every time a play is staged, this unit always wants to have many performances, both to serve the public and to allow the artists to freely perform their roles after a long period of practice. However, the lack of performance venues due to the Opera House, Le Ngoc Theater's favorite venue, having to close for repairs is making this unit struggling to find a replacement stage.
“Recently, we produced the play “The Order of the Heart”, mobilizing 140 actors from many theaters but in the end, we could only perform for 3 nights because there was no theater. To produce a grand play with a budget of more than 1 billion VND but only perform for 3 nights, how can we recover the capital? Investing in a play includes many costs: author's fee, music fee, artist fee, venue rental fee, advertising fee, actor's salary... but only performing for 3 nights means failure, which unit dares to do it?” - Meritorious Artist Van Hai said.
The case of Hanoi Rock City - a venue supporting young artists and quite famous indie bands in Hanoi - having to temporarily close due to the expiration of its lease is also causing regret. Once a cultural gathering place, attracting a large number of music lovers at home and abroad, Hanoi Rock City is the place to "nurture" the musical journey of bands such as Ngọt, Meow Lạc... where they can freely compose, perform and find new listeners, starting with small-scale music nights.
Also recently, many artists expressed regret over the closure of the Lan Anh and Trong Dong stages in Ho Chi Minh City. With over 30 years of operation, these spaces were once the places that “witnessed” the vibrant period of the Vietnamese music scene, with many branded programs and many famous singers. The subjective reason is that these stages have been degraded and not maintained.
According to the explanation of the representative of the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City, the objective reason for closing these two stages is because the demand for entertainment through social networking platforms is growing strongly; meanwhile, live shows require large audience capacity, modern technical requirements, visual experiences... and many other amenities during the process of enjoying art that these venues with current conditions cannot meet.
With entertainment art programs, many organizers are moving locations to suburban areas. Therefore, open, outdoor spaces are always the top choice. Grand live concerts such as “Anh trai vu ngan cong gai”, “Anh trai say hi”, “Chi dep Concert”... require a capacity of tens of thousands of spectators, and can flexibly apply sound effects, lighting and new techniques.
Recently, instead of being held in the inner city, the second concert “Anh trai vu ngan cong gai” took place at Vinhomes Ocean Park 3 (Hung Yen) - a place considered one of the most magnificent stages, meeting international standards with an area of over 5.5 hectares.
Or the show “Sketch a Rose” by Ha Anh Tuan with a 20m high rose model, weighing 20 tons, with a large rotating tray combined with the use of 3D mapping projection technology, a high-brightness projector system and an international standard JBL sound system... shows that the audience's attraction is partly due to the elaborate investment in the stage, something that indoor spaces or small-scale venues cannot do.
However, the limitation of large stages in the suburbs is that they are wasteful, take a lot of effort while the usage time cannot be long, and can affect the daily life of surrounding residents.
At the seminar "Dialogue on mechanisms and policies to promote the development of cultural industries in the music sector" held at the end of April, Mr. Nguyen Xuan An, Communications Director of Yeah 1 said: Units face many difficulties in finding venues to organize large music events. For example, the concerts "Anh trai vuon ngan cong gai" and "Chi dep dap gio xu song" require venues with a capacity of 30,000 to 50,000 people. In Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, it is possible to find venues with a capacity of 3,000 to 5,000 people, however, it is very difficult to find a venue with a capacity of 30,000 to 50,000 people.
The inner city theater is small, dilapidated and not suitable for current needs, while the suburban theater is not yet capable of covering the entire program. Therefore, how to use cultural institutions effectively is an unsolved problem.
Perhaps it is time to seriously evaluate the need to enjoy art, choosing spaces and locations suitable for each target group. In particular, traditional stages need to be adapted, with more systematic investment in sound quality, lighting, experience forms... Building entertainment art stages requires support from the locality, and connections between producers.
For example, recently, the organizers of “Anh trai vu ngan cong gai” and “Chi dep concert” have held two programs close to each other, taking advantage of the performance space and saving on design and construction costs. However, this is only a temporary solution, internal in nature. In the future, we need a strategic and systematic vision, especially when we are aiming to develop the cultural industry, increase performances and export music.
