Vietnamese-origin badminton player shocks the world

Nhat Nguyen (birth name Nguyen Nhat), an Irish tennis player of Vietnamese origin, has just shocked the badminton world when he defeated Loh Kean Yew in the first round of the China Masters 2025.

Nhat Nguyen is 25 years old this year, has Irish nationality but was born in Hanoi . He is a player who has made strong progress in the top badminton world recently.

And on the afternoon of September 16, Nhat Nguyen made a strong impression when he defeated Loh Kean Yew - ranked 8th in the world , one of the championship candidates of the China Masters.

Nhat Nguyen even needed only 2 games to defeat his Singaporean opponent. He won the first game dramatically 22-20, before exploding in the second game to win 21-14. The match lasted only 47 minutes.

It is important to know that Loh has been a monument in the top badminton village for the past 5-6 years. The Singaporean player won the men's singles at the 2025 World Championship, as well as owning a series of prestigious championships at BWF World Tour tournaments.

The China Masters is a Super 750 tournament, one of the most prestigious tournaments on the BWF World Tour. This year's tournament has a record total prize money of up to 1.25 million USD.

The victory over Loh Kean Yew in the first round of the tournament helped Nhat Nguyen pocket at least $5,000 in prize money at the tournament. But more importantly, defeating a seeded player in a major tournament like the China Masters shows that Nhat Nguyen's future is promising.

Nhat Nguyen was born in Hanoi. His family emigrated to Ireland when he was 6 years old, and by the time he was 17 he was eligible to play for the European country.

In 2016, Nhat Nguyen's name began to be known when he won the gold medal at the European U17 Championship. Not long after that, the Vietnamese-born tennis player became the champion of Ireland.

Over the next few years, Nhat Nguyen developed his career in both men's singles and men's doubles, before focusing on men's singles from the age of 20.

To date, Nhat Nguyen has risen to 31st place in the world. He regularly participates in major tournaments in the World Tour system, and is often in the top 16 players of the tournament.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Nhat Nguyen won 2 matches in the group stage, only losing to that year's champion Axelsen.

Nhat Nguyen has an older sister, Tham Nguyen (Nguyen Tham), a famous Irish weightlifter. She won 3 bronze medals at the European Championships.
