Gaza ceasefire talks suspended

Gaza ceasefire talks in Qatar’s capital Doha have been suspended until next week, Al Jazeera reported. In a joint statement issued on August 16, Egypt, Qatar and the United States said senior officials from the three countries would meet again in Cairo in the hope of reaching a final agreement on a ceasefire in Gaza on terms proposed to Hamas and Israel in Doha.

The joint statement said that over the past 48 hours in Doha, senior officials from the three governments have engaged in intensive negotiations as mediators, aiming to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages and detainees.

According to the statement, the United States, with the support of Qatar and Egypt, presented a proposal to bridge the gap between Hamas and Israel on August 16, in accordance with the principles proposed by President Biden on May 31 and UN Security Council Resolution 2735.

The statement added that the proposal builds on the progress made over the past week and closes remaining gaps in a way that will allow for the agreement’s swift implementation. Technical teams will continue to work on implementation details, including arrangements to ensure the agreement’s comprehensive humanitarian dimension and issues related to hostages and detainees.

Top negotiators from Egypt, Qatar, Israel and the US held talks in the Qatari capital on August 15 and 16 at the joint call of Egyptian President El-Sisi, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and US President Biden.
