There is no way Xavi is applying for the position of captain of the Indian national team. |
According to the AIFF, the documents that were said to belong to these two famous coaches are “unauthentic”. On July 24, The Times of India revealed that Xavi’s name appeared on the list of candidates received by the AIFF. A member of the AIFF technical committee also said that the cost of Xavi was too high to consider.
However, on Saturday (July 26), AIFF spoke up to confirm the incident: "We received an email with application documents in the names of Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. After verification, the authenticity of these documents cannot be guaranteed and they have been confirmed to be fake."
According to AIFF, they received a total of 170 applications for the head coach position, before narrowing the list down to three potential candidates.
The Indian national team is currently without a permanent head coach after Igor Stimac was sacked in June last year. His interim successor was Spaniard Manolo Marquez, but he has since left to return to manage FC Goa in the Indian Super League.
The Guardiola and Xavi impersonations show that the appeal of the Indian national team's hot seat is being exaggerated, but in reality, the AIFF is still having difficulty finding a top-class coach capable of leading the national team through the crisis.
