Shorten time, reduce costs and emissions
Can Tho Port Joint Stock Company (under Vietnam National Shipping Lines – VIMC ) informed about the upcoming exploitation of the Can Tho – Cai Mep (Ba Ria – Vung Tau) sea transport route. This is considered a new turning point for logistics and export of goods in the Mekong Delta.
This sea transport route not only helps optimize time and costs, but is also an important foundation for goods from the Mekong Delta region to reach out to the global market.

According to Can Tho Port Joint Stock Company, the Can Tho - Cai Mep shipping route will use 3,000-ton ships, with a frequency of 2 trips/week.
Notably, the breakthrough in time, the journey will be shortened from 48 hours to only 15 hours, reducing nearly 70% of the time compared to traditional river transport. This not only helps businesses save operating costs but also increases the speed of goods circulation, promptly meeting supply chain requirements.
Not only does it bring economic benefits, this sea route also brings great environmental benefits. Can Tho Port Joint Stock Company said that the Can Tho - Cai Mep sea transport will help reduce more than 60% of CO2 emissions compared to road transport, contributing to sustainable development efforts and minimizing the impact on climate change.
Leverage for global connectivity
A big plus point of this shipping route is its ability to flexibly meet the demand for transporting both dry and refrigerated goods. This is a key factor, especially important in the context of the increasingly developing cold supply chain in the Mekong Delta. Stable and efficient shipping by sea will provide maximum support for agricultural and aquatic products, which are the region's strengths.
More specifically, Cai Mep Port is one of the major international gateway ports, with a direct shipping route system to Europe, North America and the Middle East. The direct connection from Can Tho Port to Cai Mep will open up great potential for the development of transcontinental shipping routes, creating opportunities for direct connection to major markets around the world.
This is an important foundation for gradually forming a direct export logistics corridor by sea for the Southwest region in the near future.
This strategic shipping route is the result of cooperation between member units of Vietnam National Shipping Lines (VIMC) and DP World Group - one of the world's leading port and logistics operators.
Vision for Cai Cui Port Development
It is known that Can Tho Port Joint Stock Company (VIMC) is working with Tan Cang Waterway Transport Joint Stock Company (Saigon New Port Corporation - SNP) to exploit Cai Cui port, located on the Hau River, in Cai Rang district, Can Tho city.

Cai Cui Port plays an important role in the circulation of goods such as fertilizers, steel, imported wood, motorbikes and equipment for large projects in the Mekong Delta.
However, over the past years, the general operation at Cai Cui port has not been fully effective, mainly due to the insufficient depth of the shipping channel from the sea to the Hau River, causing difficulties in receiving large tonnage ships.
On April 21, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested Saigon Newport Corporation, Vietnam National Shipping Lines, and Can Tho City People's Committee to study the best plan to develop Cai Cui port in the coming time.
