Specifically, patient PTN (21 years old) was brought to the Institute of Mental Health by his family in a state of “laughing alone for no reason, hitting his mother”. Through medical history, doctors discovered that the patient had started using many types of stimulants such as N2O, ketamine, marijuana… about 5 years ago. Initially, the use only took place during fun times with friends, bringing a feeling of joy and comfort.
However, over time, the frequency and amount of use increases. When not using, the patient becomes restless, irritable, and depressed. The patient begins to show symptoms of serious mental disorders such as: Hearing voices in the head, mumbling to himself, irritability, cursing and even hitting his mother. This condition is diagnosed as: Mental and behavioral disorders due to the use of many types of drugs with mixed symptoms.
Doctors say PTN’s case is not unique. According to research, polysubstance use is very common among adolescents. Of those participating in substance abuse treatment programs, up to 96% use polysubstances. This shows that adolescents can easily switch from one substance to another, or use multiple substances at the same time, making treatment more complicated.
There are many different types of stimulants and drugs available today, from traditional ones like marijuana to more dangerous new ones like “lazy cake”, “laughing gas” (N2O) or synthetic drugs in nightclubs like MDMA and ketamine.
These substances cause many short-term and long-term negative effects. Among them, marijuana causes impaired memory, learning and problem-solving abilities, loss of coordination and increased heart rate. High doses of LSD can cause hallucinations, paranoia, and panic attacks. Synthetic drugs cause high-risk behaviors such as violence and theft.
In particular, alcohol and marijuana abuse can also cause structural and functional defects in the brain, leading to impaired memory, attention, and information processing speed.
To recognize early signs of substance use in adolescents, parents and relatives need to pay attention to unusual changes such as: Changes in academic performance; Changes in relationships with family and friends; Changes in personal hygiene; Unexplained phone calls.
