The play “From Viet Bac to Hanoi” was directed by Dr., People's Artist Trieu Trung Kien based on the literary script by Associate Professor, Doctor, writer Nguyen The Ky; Cai Luong adaptation: Hoang Song Viet; Director: Dr., People's Artist Trieu Trung Kien; Music: People's Artist Trong Dai.
Sharing about the content of the play at a press conference held on August 7 in Hanoi, Associate Professor, Doctor, writer Nguyen The Ky said: The reformed opera "From Viet Bac to Hanoi" focuses on portraying the image of Nguyen Ai Quoc - Ho Chi Minh after 30 years of searching for a way to save the country, encountering the light of Marxism-Leninism, founding the Communist Party of Vietnam and on January 28, 1941, he returned to the Fatherland, directly leading the Vietnamese revolution.

He and his comrades went to villages in Cao Bang, then neighboring localities to propagate the revolution, build networks, train cadres; build guerrilla teams and mass organizations; establish the Viet Minh Front; combine political struggle with armed struggle; contact and coordinate with the Chinese Communist Party and allied forces...
He was arrested and imprisoned in the Chinese Nationalist Party's prison. After being released from prison, he returned to the country and, together with our Party, led the revolution to make the August Revolution of 1945. On the afternoon of September 2, 1945, President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence, giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
From the play, viewers will have more interesting surprises when learning about the rich activities and strategic and sharp vision of leader Ho Chi Minh.
“From Viet Bac to Hanoi” is volume 3 of the historical novel series “Nuoc non van dam” by Associate Professor, Doctor, writer Nguyen The Ky. The novel series consists of 5 volumes, printed and published from 2022 to 2025.
With the consent of the author of the novel, Doctor, People's Artist, Director Trieu Trung Kien and composer Hoang Song Viet, together with artists from the Vietnam Cai Luong Theater (now the Vietnam National Traditional Theater), a plan was made to adapt and stage the novel into 5 parts, equivalent to 5 stage plays.
Part 1, "Debt to the Country" was released to the public in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and many provinces and cities across the country from 2022 to present with over 100 live performances and on television and radio.
Part 2, "Drifting on the Four Seas" is in the planning stage.
Part 3, “From Viet Bac to Hanoi” was given priority to be produced and released to the public on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day, September 2.
Talking about the challenges of staging the play, Dr. People's Artist Trieu Trung Kien said that the production team had to race against time to complete the play. The biggest challenge was how to vividly and convincingly recreate on stage the historical period spanning 5 years, from 1941 to 1945, with a plethora of monumental events and many historical figures.
The director cleverly structured the play into 5 acts, consistent with the chronicle narrative style of the novel, actively creating a linear chronological flow of the play. The stage was designed in a minimalist style, incorporating an LED screen to transition scenes and display images and documentary footage.

In particular, recreating the image of President Ho Chi Minh, the play always focuses on exploiting the simple, everyday beauty of a leader. In the relationship with comrades such as Truong Chinh, Hoang Van Thu, Pham Van Dong, Vo Nguyen Giap, Le Quang Ba, Phung Chi Kien, Chu Van Tan..., or with the simple people who are passionately patriotic, the character Ho Chi Minh always shows noble yet simple qualities.
To be able to choose an artist to portray President Ho Chi Minh, People's Artist Trieu Trung Kien said he had to work with 4 artists to be able to choose the right person.

Artist Van Thuan, who plays President Ho Chi Minh, shared that this was a huge pressure for him, even causing him to lose sleep and appetite for many days due to worry, but this was also a great honor for the artist. Receiving encouragement from the director and colleagues, he made efforts to research documents, learn, practice from the voice to the mannerisms and appearance of Uncle Ho to be able to complete the role well.
The Cai Luong play “From Viet Bac to Hanoi” also features performances by many talented artists from the Vietnam National Traditional Theater, such as: Minh Hai, People's Artist Manh Hung, Nhu Quynh, Ngan Ha; Bui Anh Tuan, Van Dang, Vu Long, Meritorious Artist Quang Khai...
