Schools in disaster areas: Don't let children's learning be interrupted

With the tireless efforts of local authorities, Women's Unions at all levels, volunteer forces and the community, schools affected by natural disasters have been cleaned up, repaired and ready for a new school year. Tam Thanh border commune ( Thanh Hoa province) is a locality that suffered heavy damage due to the circulation of storm No. 5. Talking to PNVN Newspaper, Mr. Le The Anh, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Tam Thanh commune, said that the floods after the storm caused 46 landslides, more than 8,000m3 of soil and rock flooded into schools, houses, roads... in the area. In Tam Thanh commune, due to the impact of natural disasters, the Kindergarten and Primary School in Cha Lung village were seriously affected when a large amount of soil and rock flooded into the schoolyard and classrooms. Together with local authorities, the Women's Union mobilized forces to support the school in cleaning up the classrooms. The Association also visited and encouraged member families affected by natural disasters.

Ms. Ngan Thi Thuong, Principal of Tam Thanh Kindergarten, said that by September 3, the work of overcoming the consequences of the storm and flood had been basically completed. The school mobilized teachers to coordinate with local authorities to clear rocks and soil, redecorate the campus, hang the national flag, ensuring that the new school year would be ready to welcome nearly 200 students.

HCMC: Adding motivation to disadvantaged children

In Ho Chi Minh City, the Women's Unions of communes and wards have carried out many meaningful activities, giving gifts and supporting godchildren as well as students in difficult circumstances before the new school year. In Thanh My Tay ward, the Women's Union organized the program "Thanh My Tay Women - Accompanying Children to School", awarding 15 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai scholarships worth 24 million VND. At the same time, the Union has integrated the program "Godmother - Loving Arms", awarding 2 parts of funding worth 12 million VND to orphans, along with 8 gifts worth 4 million VND to children in difficult circumstances. Women's Unions in 16 neighborhoods in the ward also coordinated to award scholarships and gifts to children in difficult circumstances, with a total cost of more than 108 million VND.

At the end of August, the Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Binh Chau commune organized the program "Sponsoring orphans and children in especially difficult circumstances". During the program, the organizers presented gifts and supported 15 children with a rate of 6 million VND/child/year, divided into 2 phases. The Women's Union of Binh Chau commune alone donated notebooks and school supplies to the children.

Ms. Trinh Thi Thanh, Permanent Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Women's Union, said that the Union has just coordinated with the Logistics Department of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army and the Ho Chi Minh City Women Entrepreneurs Association to award 161 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai scholarships for the 2025-2026 school year, worth nearly 500 million VND. This is an annual activity that has been held for the past 35 years, awarding nearly 217 billion VND, supporting more than 400,000 students in difficult circumstances.

Units that meet the conditions will teach two sessions per day according to the instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training. This school year also marks a major turning point when Hanoi for the first time supports boarding meals for about 768,000 primary school students at public and private schools (excluding foreign-invested schools).

Ho Chi Minh City also requires that the collection level must be appropriate to the local reality, if there is an increase compared to the previous year, it must be explained, made public and transparent, and have the consent of parents. Schools invite parents to participate in monitoring and following up to have a basis for appropriate adjustments. The city's Department of Education and Training also requests that public educational institutions not change their names or generate any collection content outside of the prescribed categories.
