Prayut Chan-o-cha's deputy resigns as PPRP leader

General Prawit Wongsuwon, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, has announced his resignation as leader of the People's Power Party (PPRP).

PPRP deputy leader Paiboon Nititawan said that General Prawit, who is also the outgoing Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, submitted his resignation this morning, confirming that his resignation is effective immediately.

The resignation of the party leader means the end of the current term of the PPRP Party Executive Committee. Also this morning, Mr. Paiboon convened a meeting to elect a new party leader and in the meeting, Mr. Prawit was nominated again, and was the only candidate. However, this politician did not attend the above meeting.

However, speaking before the vote, Mr Paiboon affirmed: "General Prawit will continue to stay and monitor the party's steps."

General Prawit Wongsuwon is a familiar figure in Thai politics. He is currently the First Deputy Prime Minister.

Notably, this politician once temporarily headed the Thai government after his close friend, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, temporarily stepped down from his position in August 2022 following a ruling by the Thai Supreme Court regarding the term limit.

In related news, this week, the March Forward Party (MFP), the party that won Thailand's general election, announced that it would not form a coalition with the PPRP and the United Thai National Party (UTN).

Meanwhile, the Pheu Thai party has named its own prime ministerial candidate and is moving forward with the process of forming a new government with several other parties.

The Thai National Assembly is expected to vote to choose a new prime minister in early August.
