On January 14, Mr. Huynh Nam Phat - residing in Binh An commune, Chau Thanh district, Kien Giang province - said that he had just harvested 3 hectares of coconuts and sold more than 10,000 fruits to traders at a price of 90,000 VND/dozen. With a price of 7,500 VND/fruit, after deducting expenses, Mr. Phat earned a profit of more than 15 million VND, so he was very happy.

The family of Ms. Truong My Hang (living in the same locality) also has a garden of more than 250 coconut trees. About 10 days ago, her family also sold more than 1,200 coconuts to traders at the price of 90,000 VND/dozen.

“This year, the price of coconuts is about 40,000 - 50,000 VND/dozen higher than last year. Thanks to selling coconuts, my family will have a warmer Tet this year,” Ms. Hang said excitedly.

Currently, dry coconuts are being purchased by traders at prices ranging from 85,000 - 100,000 VND/dozen (12-fruit type). According to many coconut traders in Kien Giang province, coconut prices have increased compared to the same period last year due to increased demand from China.

“Not only is the demand from the international market increasing, but domestic factories and businesses are also in dire need of raw materials to produce confectionery and jams for the Tet holiday. Therefore, the domestic demand for coconut is also increasing sharply,” said Mr. Tran Van Dung, a trader specializing in purchasing coconuts in Ben Tre .

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Nghia - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Kien Giang province - Vietnamese coconut products are increasingly appreciated by the international market for their quality and reputation, opening up great opportunities for export.

The production and processing of fresh coconuts in Vietnam has grown strongly, increasing the value of coconuts and helping to stabilize product prices, creating a solid foundation for farmers and businesses.
