Farmers in many communes in western Lam Dong "lost" the summer-autumn crop

In many areas in the West of Lam Dong, farmers are harvesting short-term crops in the summer-autumn season. Unlike the happy mood of the harvest season, many farmers are sad because of failures in prices, productivity, and quality of agricultural products.

Many farmers in the West of Lam Dong failed to achieve both the yield and quality of summer-autumn radishes.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao, Quang Tien village, Quang Son commune, said that her family is harvesting nearly 5 hectares of sweet potatoes in the summer-autumn crop. If in previous years, her sweet potato garden had an average yield of about 20 tons per hectare, this year it only reached about 15 tons per hectare. The decrease in the yield of grade 1 sweet potatoes means a decrease in income. In addition, this year the price is also low. Currently, she can only sell grade 1 sweet potatoes for 8 million VND per ton, about 4 million VND per ton lower than the previous crop. At this price, after deducting the costs of seeds, labor, materials, pesticides, fertilizers, and irrigation water at the beginning of the dry season, it is considered a loss. Talking about the cause, Ms. Thao said it was due to many factors such as erratic weather, degraded seeds, and prices depending on the market...

Sharing the same concern of both crop failure and price decline, Mr. Nguyen Van Thieu, Tan Ninh village, Nam Dong commune said: This summer-autumn crop, his family planted 4 sao of cabbage. He has now completed harvesting 12 tons, with the selling price at the field not reaching 2,000 VND/kg, down half compared to the first crop of the year. He said that this crop, both in terms of output and price, has decreased, with almost no profit after deducting the cost of planting, fertilizer, and irrigation water.

Similarly, Mr. Tran Trong Thi's family in Nam Gia Nghia ward has 1 hectare of land growing leafy vegetables and radishes in the summer-autumn season. Mr. Thi said that this season his family "lost" in both price and output. Due to heavy rain and disease, the family's vegetable garden yielded less than previous years. Typically, with cabbage and radishes, soft rot diseases caused a lot of damage. Although attention was paid to prevention and control, this year's heavy rains resulted in almost no yield or quality, with second-class goods, and even the stale goods that had to be left in the garden accounted for about 30% - 40%. The quality and appearance were not high, meaning the selling price was pulled down, only about half compared to the previous season, for example, radishes were only sold for 1,500 - 2,000 VND/kg. Mr. Thi sadly said: "Nearly 3 months of this rainy season have been wasted, not to mention making any profit. I am wondering what to plant for the next season."

According to the plan of the agriculture and environment sector, in the summer-autumn crop of 2025, people in 28 communes and wards in the West of the province will plant about 45,917 hectares of short-term crops. The total food output of localities strives to reach over 205,000 tons. To achieve this plan, currently, the agriculture and environment sector of the province and localities are stepping up guidance, urging and encouraging people to plant seeds, synchronously applying many solutions for a successful crop.

There are no complete statistics yet, however, through the reporter's preliminary understanding, some short-term crops in some localities have failed in harvest and lost value. Many farmers with large areas are choosing to "anchor the garden" - (postpone the harvest date) and wait for prices to increase in the hope of recovering some income.
