Like a miracle

The search journey lasted for decades, but the flame of hope in the hearts of the martyrs' relatives never died. Then, at the sacred moment when they reached the graves of their loved ones, tears burst out. Not only because of happiness but also to soothe the wounds of war that had been smoldering for many years. These were touching stories about the undying love, the noble sacrifices and the return of the heroes who had remained on the battlefield. From here, the heroes could rest eternally in the bosom of Mother Earth.

The pain never ends

During the days of July, among thousands of people visiting and burning incense at the martyrs' graves at the Martyrs' Cemetery of Tay Ninh province, we came across the image of nun Thich Nu Dieu Ngo (from Vinh Long province) sitting next to the grave of martyr Nguyen Van Set, quietly wiping away tears. Nun Dieu Ngo said: “When I was 5 years old, my father left the family to join the revolution. Every time he came home to visit, he bought banh u for the whole family and promised that when peace came , he would come back home and stay forever, and not leave again. In 1975, when the country was unified, my family and everyone in the neighborhood went to welcome their relatives back but could not find my father. Later, the family received a death certificate announcing that he had died in 1968. It was even more heartbreaking when we could not find my father's remains.”

In the same situation, Ms. Trinh Thi Kim Diep (from Hanoi ) could not hold back her emotions when visiting the grave of her brother - martyr Trinh Quoc Tuong. Ms. Diep said that the family was poor, with many siblings, her brother had to quit school to work to earn money to help his parents take care of his younger siblings. After working for 2 years, he received a notice to join the army and support the South. "He played the flute well, wrote beautiful calligraphy and studied well. Since childhood, he was very emotional, and gave all the money he earned to his parents to take care of his younger siblings. Before receiving the death notice, the family still did not give up hope. In 1975, the family received the death notice, he had sacrificed himself in the field in the middle of the flood season" - Ms. Diep said.

Miracles in everyday life

For nearly 50 years, nun Thich Nu Dieu Ngo has been searching everywhere for her father's remains. Many people advised her to give up because she had not found any results for so many years. But with strong faith and perseverance, she finally found the remains of martyr Nguyen Van Set in 2018 at the Long An Province Martyrs' Cemetery (old). Nun Dieu Ngo said: "Thanks to technology and social networks, I found my father's grave. Every year, I go to burn incense and visit my father's grave three times. Finding my father's grave has been my family's wish for many years, especially my mother's. I am the only daughter of my parents, so I want to fulfill my mother's wish even more."

After the country was unified, Trinh Thi Kim Diep's family went to the South countless times, traveling everywhere just to find the remains of martyr Trinh Quoc Tuong to bring back to their homeland to rest next to their loved ones. Many times they went in, then returned quietly, because they did not know where the remains of the martyr were located among the thousands of graves in the cemeteries.

Ms. Diep added: “Like a miracle, in 1989, my father visited the old battlefield and stopped by the provincial Martyrs’ Cemetery to try his luck. Here, the Cemetery Management Board said there were 2 martyrs named Tuong, one of whom was from Hanoi. Seeing that, my father suggested going to see and luckily found his grave. In the past, when my parents were still alive, I often took them to visit the grave. Many times the family also intended to bring him back to his hometown, but thinking again, here he had comrades, comrades and the Cemetery Management Board took good care of him, so the family only visited and burned incense on holidays and Tet.”

The war has long since ended, and the pain and loss seem to have been obscured by the dust of time. However, through the two stories of nun Thich Nu Dieu Ngo and Mrs. Trinh Thi Kim Diep, we can see that although the wounds have healed, the scars are still there, burning with pain. Hopefully, miracles will also come to families of policy beneficiaries and those who have contributed to the journey to find the graves of martyrs./.
