Integration is no longer a matter of youth

For about 10 years now, Ms. Phi Thi Lam (90 years old), group 8, Phan Thiet ward ( Tuyen Quang city) has been proficient in using smartphones in her daily life. Ms. Lam said that at first, she did not want to use smartphones because she was afraid of blurred vision, slow hands and feet, poor memory and thought technology was something very complicated and difficult to understand. But when her children lived far away from home, and her grandchildren were busy with work, she was determined to learn how to use technology devices, so that she could easily connect with everyone in the family.

Ms. Truong Thi Ba, Lung Gieng village, Xuan Lap commune (Lam Binh) learned how to use technology thanks to the dedicated guidance of her niece.

“At first, I didn’t know what buttons to press, but thanks to my children and grandchildren’s enthusiastic guidance, now I can make video calls, send messages and read news online,” Ms. Lam happily shared. In addition, Ms. Lam also learned how to explore entertaining videos on social networks, utilities that seemed to be only for young people.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nang, Ngoi Ne village, Na Hang town (Na Hang) confided: "It has been nearly ten years since I retired, I have had few opportunities to meet my old colleagues. But fortunately, I have a smartphone with internet connection, and my children have set up Facebook and Zalo pages for me, so I have the opportunity to connect and chat with my old colleagues again."

When we talked about the elderly accessing the internet, Ms. Nang's son also joined in the conversation: "Previously, many people thought that only young people liked to use the internet, and that old people did not have this need, so they just bought them "brick" phones to make calls. One day, I accidentally read an article about the loneliness of the elderly in the modern world , then I understood that the elderly also have the need to find information, watch entertainment programs, connect with relatives and friends through smartphones... to have more fun."

Changing lives through technology

Technology is not only a tool to stay connected, it also brings practical benefits to the daily lives of seniors. Many have started using online applications to replace traditional administrative procedures. These applications help them easily look up information and verify their identity without having to carry bulky identification documents.

Ms. Truong Thi Ba, Dao ethnic group, Lung Gieng village, Xuan Lap commune (Lam Binh) expressed: “Before, every time I went out, I often forgot to bring documents such as citizen identification card or household registration book. But now, I only need a phone to be able to verify anytime, anywhere, very convenient and fast. Using technology applications helps me feel more secure, no longer worrying about losing documents or wasting time waiting for procedures."

For Mr. Hoang Thanh Xuan, 75 years old, Son Duong town (Son Duong), finding joy from technology through online exercise. Every morning, he often goes online to find exercise videos to follow, thanks to which his health has improved a lot. In addition, he also makes friends with people of the same age and interests.

In an increasingly busy society, technology has become an important bridge between generations. The elderly in Tuyen Quang, despite many difficulties, still make constant efforts to keep up with the times and affirm their own value.

Advances in information technology are helping the elderly overcome many obstacles to connect more with friends and relatives, helping to keep their minds active in daily life.
