Literature materials outside textbooks, what solutions reduce pressure for students?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên07/11/2023

Students in grades 8 and 11 do not have difficulty because they are familiar with the way of making literature questions using materials outside the textbook from the previous school year.

Observing the situation of the mid-term exam in the first semester, we can see many encouraging signs. Specifically, teaching literature has gradually eliminated model texts, "erasing" the "parrot" learning and rote learning that has existed for so long.

Difficulty when the text is difficult and long

However, with the literature test material being text completely new, students still encounter some difficulties.

For example, if the text (usually one of the following genres: poetry, short story, drama or essay) is long and difficult, students will have a hard time reading and doing the exercise.

For the past 2 years, the Ministry of Education and Training has advocated that teachers use materials other than textbooks when creating literature tests.

When teachers let students prepare essays at home, they have more time to read the text and have the opportunity to refer to materials to understand the text. But when taking a test, with a relatively short time (90 minutes), it is not easy to understand the exact content and topic of the text.

Students with good language skills may find it quite easy. However, those who read slowly or have cognitive limitations find it difficult to understand the text. If they do not understand the text or misunderstand it, they will not be able to do the test or will go off topic.

For students who chose the combination with the literature subject, most of them did very well. However, with the same test, students who did not choose the literature subject did very poorly, with many mistakes, especially in the writing and analysis sections.

Solutions to reduce pressure for students

To help students overcome difficulties, first of all, those who create literature test questions need to pay attention to the length (length, shortness) of the text. Those who create test questions should not choose texts that are too difficult beyond the students' level of understanding. The questions also need to closely follow the requirements of the lesson and genre.

The structure of the test is also a way to reduce pressure on students. Accordingly, the test makers need to increase the reading comprehension score and reduce the writing score in a ratio of 6/4 like the current test model in many schools. Social discussion questions are integrated into the reading comprehension section.

When creating a scoring answer, teachers should not expect students to analyze deeply, thoroughly and write at length. The important thing is that students understand the text, draw out the meaning and lessons and analyze some literary knowledge characteristics according to the requirements. With a text that is read for the first time, the examiner should give points to encourage students when they have sharp, discovering and individual comments.

Teachers should also limit the range of topics that will be covered on the test so that students can actively review.
