Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on September 15 that he would take “exceptional measures” to deal with the wave of migrants, including a call for the deployment of naval forces to join the blockade in North Africa, after a week that saw more than 6,000 people from Tunisia arrive on the island of Lampedusa in just one day.

Ms Meloni invited European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen to visit Lampedusa to see the conditions for herself and called on the European Union (EU) to implement a new migration deal with Tunisia aimed at stopping people smuggling in exchange for economic support.

In a video , the head of the Italian government suggested that Europe needs a “change of paradigm” to deal with a series of factors in Africa – conflict, instability, soaring grain prices and the climate crisis – that she warned could push millions of people to risk their lives to make their way to the “Old Continent”.

At an upcoming Italian Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Meloni will propose a series of measures to crack down on migrants and human traffickers. She will warn would-be refugees that they will be detained and repatriated if they enter Italy illegally.
