US investigates China's TP-Link after cyberattacks

(CLO) The US has security concerns about a networking equipment manufacturer that controls more than 60% of the home internet router market in this country.

TP-Link, a Chinese networking equipment maker that currently holds more than 60% of the market share for home wifi routers in the US, has been launched by the Biden administration, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

Two US congressmen, Republican John Moolenaar and Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi, who head the House Special Committee on China, have called on the Ministry of Industry and Trade to further investigate the security threat that TP-Link may pose. They expressed concern that TP-Link routers contain many security vulnerabilities and can be exploited to carry out cyber attacks.

The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has subpoenaed TP-Link to investigate security concerns and the company's possible involvement in cyberattacks from China. In addition, the US Department of Defense and the Department of Justice are also conducting investigations into TP-Link.

For its part, TP-Link stated: "We welcome any opportunity to demonstrate that our security measures fully meet industry security standards."

Additionally, according to reports from other sources, TP-Link has made several moves to distance itself from its Chinese roots, including restructuring the company and moving its headquarters from Singapore to Irvine, California. However, these moves have only added to the suspicions of US investigators about TP-Link’s true ties to the Chinese government .

Meanwhile, a representative from the Chinese Embassy in Washington responded, calling it an act of "oppression and bullying".
