MU needs government support to build new Old Trafford stadium. |
The Guardian revealed that Manchester United is having trouble buying land to build infrastructure for the new stadium. The "Red Devils" partners are asking for more than £400 million for a piece of land for the project. Meanwhile, Manchester United only values this land at £40 to £50 million.
The huge price difference could significantly slow down the progress of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's new stadium. In addition, the Manchester club has yet to receive planning permission for the project.
In June, United announced plans to develop a new stadium next to the historic Old Trafford, part of a massive regeneration project that will include 17,000 homes, shops, restaurants and hotels, and which promises to boost the UK economy by £7.3bn.
Visions for the new stadium are impressive, with renderings revealing a giant LED screen surrounding the pitch, a three-storey museum and a bustling fans' village with canalside restaurants.
A big advantage of the plan is that MU can continue to play at Old Trafford during the construction process. After moving to the new home, the "Red Devils" can demolish the "Theatre of Dreams".
