Ortega, at 32, is seen as a short-term option for MU. |
The Times reports that Manchester United are ready to sign Ortega, with the Manchester City goalkeeper becoming redundant at the Etihad. The 32-year-old goalkeeper joined Manchester City from Arminia Bielefeld on a free transfer in 2022 and has quickly established himself as the second-choice goalkeeper at the Etihad.
However, the arrival of James Trafford from Burnley this summer has put Ortega's future at the Etihad in doubt, while Manchester United are looking for a quality goalkeeper to compete with Andre Onana.
According to Manchester Evening News , coach Ruben Amorim highly appreciates Ortega's footwork and reflexes. The "Red Devils" are very serious about their plans to recruit the Manchester City goalkeeper.
If the deal goes through, it will be the first time Manchester City have sold a player directly to Manchester United, marking a historic moment in the fierce rivalry between the two city rivals. However, United's biggest challenge lies in convincing Ortega, who is still considering other destinations.
Furthermore, Man City’s transfer fee – estimated at around £30m – is also a barrier, especially as Man United are facing financial pressure after a difficult 2024/25 season. Previously, coach Ruben Amorim considered adding Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa, but the Argentine goalkeeper’s price tag was too high (over £40m).
