One of the oldest hospitals in Indochina celebrates 105 years of establishment

Saint Paul Hospital, Hanoi, is one of the oldest hospitals in the capital and in the whole Indochina region, celebrating its 105th anniversary today, August 22.

Saint Paul Hospital is one of the oldest hospitals in Indochina, established in the 1920s, and in 1930 its official name was Saint Paul Surgical Hospital.

According to information from experts, along with Phu Doan Hospital (currently Viet Duc Friendship Hospital) and Don Thuy Hospital (currently 108 Central Military Hospital), Xanh Pon Hospital (then called Saint Paul Surgical Hospital) was the first surgical facility in Hanoi .

On August 26, 1970, the Hanoi Department of Health decided to merge four medical facilities: Saint Paul Surgical Hospital, B Pediatric Hospital, Ba Dinh Ward Hospital and Hanoi Gynecology Clinic into the current Saint Paul General Hospital.

After 105 years of development, Xanh Pon is now a grade 1 general hospital in Hanoi, with 27 clinical departments and 870 beds, serving thousands of patients for examination and treatment every day.

For many years, Xanh Pon has been a general hospital strong in surgery, pediatrics, burn treatment..., and a training facility for medical staff at college, university and postgraduate levels of medical schools in the region.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Nguyen Duc Long, Director of the Hospital, said that except for the time affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, the hospital's professional indicators have increased every year, the number of medical examinations in 2024 is 1.4 times higher than in 2010, the average number of treatment days has decreased from 7.3 days in 2010 to 4.8 days in 2024.

New techniques are increasingly being deployed, among which endoscopic techniques in digestion, orthopedics, neurosurgery, spine, pediatrics, urology, and thoracic surgery have become routine.

In particular, Xanh Pon is one of the few surgical centers in the world that is a pioneer in single-port endoscopic treatment of choledochal cysts, congenital duodenal obstruction, partial nephrectomy above the kidney and double ureter in children, as well as many new techniques in plastic surgery, microsurgery, and organ transplantation.

On this occasion, Xanh Pon General Hospital was awarded the First Class Labor Medal for the second time and many other noble awards.
