Microsoft Announces New Windows 11 Version for Low-End PCs

As per Microsoft's requirement, Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 can work even with outdated DirectX 10-based video cards, even requiring TPM support and Secure Boot to be optional rather than mandatory.

Microsoft's system requirements for Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC are very low

Note that Windows 11 IoT Enterprise is a full version of Windows Enterprise that is aimed at specialized devices such as ATMs, payment terminals, digital signage systems, information kiosks, and industrial automation systems. Microsoft offers two licensing channels for the operating system, the general availability channel (GAC) and the long-term servicing channel (LTSC). The LTSC version guarantees a 10-year update cycle for specialized devices, including any major changes to the software functionality.

The most notable difference in the system requirements for Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 is a significant reduction in the minimum memory requirement, as it requires a system with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage, significantly lower than the 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage required for standard Windows 11. Another important improvement is that TPM and Secure Boot support are no longer required, which are recommended technologies for improved security.

Additionally, Qualcomm chips are also officially supported for the first time, alongside chips from AMD, Intel, and NXP. Previously, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC only supported AMD, Intel, and NXP chips. Support for Qualcomm chips comes after Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop series using the Snapdragon X Elite chip.

The requirements for graphics adapters and displays have also been significantly reduced. It will now be possible to work with graphics adapters that only support DirectX 10, or even without DirectX support. Additionally, devices can use custom-sized displays or may not have a display at all. It is known that Windows 11 normally requires DirectX 12 support and a 720p HD display with a minimum diagonal of 9 inches.

Microsoft's reduced hardware requirements for Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC are likely due to the fact that no more than five applications can be used simultaneously on these devices, usually just one, Tom's Hardware reports. Additionally, the LTSC version does not include security features and programs found on Windows desktops. They are simply not needed since Enterprise LTSC is intended for devices that are protected by firewalls and typically do not have an internet connection.
