Benchmarks are clearly polarized

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training has just announced the exam scores and admission standards for the 10th grade entrance exam of high schools in the city for the 2025-2026 school year.

This is the first year that candidates take the 10th grade entrance exam according to the 2018 General Education Program with three subjects including Literature, Math and Foreign Language. Unlike previous years when Math and Literature scores were multiplied by a factor of 2, all three subjects this year are multiplied by a factor of 1, with the total score calculated on a scale of 30.

Statistics show that high schools with high admission scores include: Le Quy Don - Ha Dong, Kim Lien (25.5 points); Phan Dinh Phung and Viet Duc (25.25 points); Yen Hoa and Nguyen Gia Thieu (25 points); Nguyen Thi Minh Khai (24.75 points); Thang Long (24.25 points)... Candidates must score more than 8 points/subject to pass.

However, statistics show that there are 26 schools with admission scores below 15 points, and some schools only have admission scores of 10 points, such as: Ung Hoa B High School, Bac Luong Son High School, Tho Xuan High School, Dai Cuong High School, Minh Quang High School, and Luu Hoang High School.

Bat Bat High School and Ung Hoa A High School have the same standard score of 12 points (meaning candidates only need to score 4 points/subject to pass). My Duc C High School has the standard score of 12.5 points... Tien Thinh High School and Tran Dang Ninh High School have the same standard score of 14.75.

Why is the entry score low?

Talking toEducation and Times Newspaper about this issue, Mr. Phan Lac Duong - Principal of Bat Bat High School (Bat Bat, Hanoi) shared that the school is located on the banks of the Da River, so the enrollment area is narrowed. The residential areas near the school do not have a secondary job, most of the workers go to work far away and bring their children with them, so it is even more difficult to recruit enough students.

This year, the number of 9th graders applying for their first choice to the school is only about 350, while the assigned quota is 450. The school will continue to recruit second choice candidates, who are students in the neighboring area who did not pass their first choice. In 2024, the top candidate to enter the school will have a score of 44.5 points in the 10th grade entrance exam - equivalent to more than 8 points/subject.

The school still applies many solutions to improve the quality of general and advanced education. Every year, the number of students participating in competitions and winning prizes in cultural subjects at the city level is maintained. Some studious families also encourage their children to study hard and pass the exams, this rate accounts for about 20% of the school.

"We believe that the quality of incoming candidates is not as important as the process of training them for 3 years at school to conquer further goals. In recent years, thanks to the efforts of both teachers and students to overcome difficulties, the rate of 12th graders passing high school graduation is 100% and passing university entrance exams is nearly 70%" - Principal of Bat Bat High School Phan Lac Duong emphasized.

From a basic perspective, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, Principal of Nguyen Thuong Hien Secondary School (Van Dinh, Hanoi) acknowledges that the fact that many schools set admission scores for grade 10 at low levels, from 10 to under 15 points/3 subjects this year, is completely explainable. The basic reason is that high schools set higher quotas than the current number of grade 9 students in the locality.

"For many years, schools in the inner city of Hanoi have had a large number of 9th graders and many places do not have enough classes or public high schools; the opposite is true in the suburbs. Moreover, suburban schools continue to enroll students in the second and third choices of inner city candidates. Ung Hoa district used to have valedictorians and top 5 students in some high school graduating exam subjects," Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa explained.

According to Mr. Nguyen Duy Binh, Principal of Minh Quang High School (Ba Vi, Hanoi), the school has a high percentage of ethnic minority students, the lowest entrance score in the city, the school's teachers have to make great efforts to motivate students to study. Although the entrance score is low, the quality of education is still guaranteed, 100% of students pass the high school graduation exam and many students are admitted to universities.
