Confused... online scam

Recently, on social networks, there have been continuous calls for help from parents looking for missing children. Online kidnapping is becoming a form of crime that makes many parents worry about the safety of their children. On forums, many parents expressed their concern and confusion about this form of crime: "It's really unsafe, there are a lot of scams now", "Young people increasingly lack life skills"...

The phenomenon of children running away from home, especially due to family conflicts or being lured through social networks, is an alarming issue that worries many parents. This not only causes unpredictable consequences for children but also reflects the gap in education and lack of parental support.

Many young people today tend to trust friends or strangers more than their parents or relatives. This is partly due to the fact that parents often make emotional decisions, impose themselves, and are easily manipulated or misled by their children. When children see that their parents are easily deceived and inconsistent, their trust is shaken and they are easily influenced from the outside.

At the age of middle school and high school, children are still immature, have little life experience, are impulsive and are discovering themselves. Receiving information on social networks is sometimes incomplete, making them easily attracted and led by bad people. At a sensitive age, children are easily influenced by what happens in their family and themselves, leading to impulsive or rebellious actions. In particular, the Internet and social networks are becoming more and more dangerous with countless scams. Children, with their lack of experience, are very susceptible to becoming victims.

Children running away from home is becoming an increasingly painful phenomenon reflecting the generation gap, the lack of emotional education and the difficulty in controlling social networks. Although many cases have been solved, many children are lucky to be found by their families, there are still unfortunate cases, or when they return, the psychological trauma and potential risks for them are still a concern for every family.

Creating a digital immune system for children

In the digital age, when technology is developing rapidly, cyberspace has become an indispensable part of children's lives. However, along with the conveniences are countless traps, especially increasingly sophisticated online scams. Equipping children with coping skills and self-protection in cyberspace is extremely urgent. This is a battle that is not for anyone alone, requiring close cooperation and coordination from many sides, from education, schools, families and even social networking platforms.

Education is the first foundation in building a "digital immune system" for children. From the lowest levels of education, children need to have access to systematic knowledge about cyber safety, appropriate for each age group. It is not only about recognizing dangers, but also teaching children how to behave civilly and responsibly when participating in cyberspace.

Schools play a central role in translating this knowledge into practical lessons and activities. Instead of just teaching theory, schools create practical educational methods through seminars with cybersecurity experts, simulated fraud situations for students to practice handling, and research projects on cyber security. The school environment must become a safe place for students to freely share their concerns and worries when encountering suspicious situations online without fear of being judged.

Meanwhile, the family is the strongest "shield" of protection for children. Parents need to proactively learn about online fraud targeting children, thereby warning and guiding their children. Raising awareness among parents about the risks of online fraud and how to accompany their children is extremely important.

Parents should not completely prohibit it, but instead become a companion, exploring cyberspace with their children, while subtly monitoring and always listening to their children's sharing. When children have problems, parents should be the first people they trust to seek help.

The "gap" that needs to be filled

Despite certain efforts, there are still gaps in education that need to be filled. Fraudulent tricks change constantly, but educational content sometimes fails to keep up. Therefore, there needs to be a mechanism to regularly update real-life situations and new tricks of cybercriminals to include in lectures. Second, knowledge of cyber safety is sometimes imparted in a one-way manner, not linked to specific situations that children may encounter. Simulation, role-playing, and problem-solving are necessary.

It is worth mentioning that not all teachers have enough knowledge and skills about cyber security to effectively convey it to students. Therefore, there is a need for in-depth training programs for teachers.

Meanwhile, the digital divide between generations still exists. Many parents, even teachers, do not really understand how the social media platforms that children are using work, leading to difficulties in advising and protecting their children.

To create a "safe ecosystem" for children in cyberspace, coordination between schools, families and social networking platforms is a key factor. It is necessary to strengthen two-way communication channels through specialized parent meetings, Zalo/Facebook classroom groups to share information about cyber risks, disseminate knowledge, and create conditions for parents to communicate directly with teachers about their children's situation.

In particular, social media platforms have a great responsibility in creating a safe environment. It is necessary to build easy-to-use tools to report abuse and fake accounts; have a mechanism to quickly censor harmful content; actively cooperate with authorities and schools to provide documents and organize awareness campaigns. It is highly effective for social media platforms to participate in cyber safety education programs at schools.

In short, protecting children from online fraud is a long and complicated journey, requiring investment in time, resources and coordinated efforts. Only when each individual and each organization in society clearly recognizes their responsibilities and acts decisively, can we create a safer cyberspace where children can learn and develop without fear of pitfalls.

It is time for parents to engage, connect and talk more with their children about the current scams and the safe use of electronic devices. The recent cases of children running away from home are a reminder for parents to be more attentive to their children. Building a strong, open family environment, along with equipping children with the necessary skills to protect themselves online, is extremely important. Companionship and listening are the most solid foundation for children to develop safely.
