Fraudulently appropriating more than 1.6 billion VND, the owner of the hui received 13 years in prison

On May 31, after 2 days of first instance trial, the People's Court of Vinh Long province sentenced defendant Bui Kim Chau (36 years old, residing in Tan Quoi town, Binh Tan district, Vinh Long) to 13 years in prison for fraud and property appropriation.

According to the indictment, around 2016, Chau organized and led the hui. During the hui, many hui members were not present to witness the opening of the hui but only based on the results announced by Chau to pay money when someone collected the hui.

Taking advantage of this trust, Chau came up with the idea of appropriating the members' money to pay off debts and for personal use, by leaving fake members' names and arbitrarily using members' names to collect the money. In addition, Chau also asked to sell the savings to others even though no members were selling, in order to appropriate the members' collected money. By October 2019, Chau declared the savings bankrupt. At this time, Chau had appropriated more than 1.6 billion VND from over 70 members.

In court, as well as during the investigation, Chau confessed honestly, repented and paid 20 million VND to remedy the consequences.

Considering that Bui Kim Chau's actions negatively affected local security and order, the People's Court sentenced the defendant to the above sentence for fraud and appropriation of property.
