Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly told his ministers on August 4 that he would seek cabinet support for his plan to take control of the entire Gaza Strip, despite opposition from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the Times Of Israel reported.
Several Israeli ministers have reportedly said that Prime Minister Netanyahu mentioned the phrase "occupation of the Gaza Strip" in private conversations, reflecting his plans to expand military operations.

"Everything is clear. We will control the entire Gaza Strip. The military operation will take place even in the areas where the hostages are being held. If the IDF Chief of Staff does not agree, he should resign," Ynet quoted a senior official close to Prime Minister Netanyahu as saying.
The Times of Israel reports that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) oppose the idea of taking control of all of Gaza. The Israeli military believes that it could take years to destroy all of Hamas’ infrastructure. Moreover, such an approach could put hostages at risk of execution if the military moves too close to where they are being held.

Currently, the IDF claims to control about 75% of Gaza. Under the new plan, the Army plans to occupy the remaining area, bringing the entire enclave under Israeli control.
The conflict between Hamas and Israel erupted in October 2023, starting with a surprise Hamas attack on southern Israel that left about 1,200 people dead and 250 hostages taken. About 50 hostages have yet to be freed, and fewer than 25 of them are believed to be alive.
The Israeli army then launched a military campaign in the Gaza Strip, killing at least 60,000 people.
