iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max are said to be two upcoming high-end models with outstanding upgrades, especially the camera system.

Although the iPhone 17 series is still a few months away from its official launch, thanks to models and some leaks, users already have a preliminary look at the upcoming changes to the camera system.

Apple will add new camera features and change the camera design on some models. Users may be skeptical about the accuracy of the recent mockups, but they have shown a high degree of accuracy in Apple's design changes over the years. Case makers are often the source of these models, as there is a big profit to be made by releasing cases first for new devices.

Changes on all 4 iPhone 17 models

All four iPhone 17 models expected to launch in 2025 will be upgraded to a 24MP front camera, a significant improvement over the current 12MP front camera.

With higher resolution, you'll be able to crop selfies without losing quality, while also improving low-light performance and increasing image detail.

iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max

For the first time, the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will feature three 48MP lenses: a 48MP Fusion main lens, a 48MP Ultra Wide lens, and a new 48MP Telephoto lens using Tetraprism technology. The Ultra Wide lens has appeared on the iPhone 16 Pro, while the Telephoto lens will be the camera highlight of 2025.

With 48MP resolution, photos taken with the Telephoto lens can be cropped deeper while still retaining detail, producing clearer close-up zoom photos.

Apple is expected to focus its camera marketing this year on video capabilities. The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will support 8K video recording (compared to 4K on the iPhone 16 Pro). There may also be a dual-camera video recording feature, allowing you to record with both the front and rear cameras at the same time, which is great for sharing on social media.

Some rumors suggest that the iPhone 17 Pro will have a mechanical aperture, allowing users to adjust the amount of light entering the lens. Apple has so far only used fixed apertures, so switching to a variable aperture would open up a lot of customization and effects, such as allowing for depth of field adjustment.

In addition to hardware upgrades, Apple will also change the design of the large camera cluster. Instead of the current square camera cluster, the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will have a horizontal camera cluster. The lenses are still arranged in a triangular layout, close together. The flash, microphone and LiDAR sensor will be moved to the right of the horizontal bar. It is not clear why Apple changed this design.

According to the inference of a user with an account X (formerly Twitter) with the name @Mia_Kacurage: Apple is said to increase the size of the sensor. To do that without changing the sensor's position, Apple may rotate the telephoto lens vertically. This will leave not enough space for the LiDAR module in the old position. Therefore, the LiDAR scanner will be moved to the outermost part of the camera cluster, along with the LED flash and microphone.

iPhone 17 Air

Due to internal space constraints, the iPhone 17 Air will only have a single 48MP Fusion camera. There is no room for an Ultra Wide or Telephoto lens because Apple wants to make the iPhone 17 Air extremely thin, according to leaked news, only 5.5mm thick.

This iPhone model will still have a horizontal camera bar like the iPhone 17 Pro, but it will be lower because it only contains one lens. The lens will be on the left, while the flash and microphone will be on the right.

With only one camera, the iPhone 17 Air will not be able to capture or record spatial content (spatial photo/video), unless Apple has a new software solution to handle spatial with a single camera.

iPhone 17 standard

Apart from upgrading the front camera to 24MP, there is no other information about the camera of the standard iPhone 17. The rear camera cluster design seems to be the same as the iPhone 16, with two lenses arranged vertically on the left side of the device.

The standard iPhone 17 will not have a horizontal camera cluster like on the Pro and Air models.

There is no news about sensor improvements yet, but this possibility cannot be ruled out. It is expected that the device will still use the 48MP Fusion lens and 12MP ultra-wide angle like the previous generation.

The iPhone 17 series will be launched by Apple this fall. The new iPhone models are expected to include: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and the super-thin iPhone 17 Air, with many new upgrades, especially the Pro models.
