This is an extremely rare congenital malformation, rare in world medical literature, when the ureter bud develops abnormally during the fetal stage, leading to the formation of 4 kidneys instead of 2 like normal people.
The patient had undergone surgery to remove ureteral stones in Ho Chi Minh City 15 years ago. Recently, she had back pain and cloudy urine. She took medicine at home but it did not help. Therefore, the patient's daughter quickly took her mother to E Hospital for examination.
Through diagnostic imaging, doctors discovered that the patient had ureteral stones causing hydronephrosis in the lower left kidney unit, in a complete duplex kidney structure on both sides. This condition was further complicated by ureteral stenosis from the previous surgery, making the surgery challenging.
The medical team promptly handled the situation. In the first stage, they performed a procedure to dilate the narrowed ureter, insert drainage tubes into both ureters, and drain the hydronephrosis to stabilize the patient's condition.
After a week, an endoscopy was performed to break up and remove the ureteral stone. Doctors also placed JJ in the ureter, which is expected to last for 12 months to ensure urine flow. The surgery was successful and the patient recovered well.
Dr. Lien said that people with more kidneys than normal people are at risk of forming stones. Especially for some people with congenital anatomical abnormalities, they have differences in internal body parts that cannot be detected from the outside, only when examining health, doing paraclinical tests can they be discovered.
This is a special case, not only medically challenging but also contributing to the research on congenital malformations.
