The Qatar Football Association (QFA) confirmed that Al Haydos' return was at the request of head coach Julen Lopetegui. The Spanish strategist hopes that the 34-year-old midfielder's experience and bravery will bring stability to the team in the journey to compete for a ticket to the 2026 World Cup, after participating as hosts in the previous tournament.
"In response to the request of head coach Julen Lopetegui, Hassan Al Haydos has returned to the national team to compete in the 4th round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Asia" - QFA officially announced.
Besides his extensive experience, Al Haydos is also considered a spiritual leader as Qatar is determined to win a ticket back to the World Cup finals after hosting the previous World Cup.
Hassan Al Haydos is the player with the most appearances for Qatar with 183 matches and 41 goals in the international arena. He was also a key factor in helping Qatar win the Asian Cup in 2019 and 2023. In March 2024, the Qatari legend decided to retire after 16 years of professional playing.
The 4th qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia will be held in Qatar, where the host team is determined to win a ticket back to the biggest football festival on the planet. Qatar will join 5 other teams to qualify for the 4th qualifying round, including UAE, Iraq, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia.
Al Haydos' return is considered a big boost both professionally and mentally for coach Lopetegui's team.
