According to CBS News, Taliban government spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat said on September 4 that the death toll in the earthquake in Afghanistan on the night of August 31 had increased to 2,205 people while 3,640 others were injured.
"Search and rescue efforts are still underway in areas affected by the earthquake. Temporary tents have been set up for displaced people. Humanitarian aid distribution is ongoing," spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat said.

Many of the affected villages are in remote areas and roads blocked by landslides have hampered rescue efforts, with some rescuers having to walk several kilometres to reach affected areas.
The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the death toll could rise in the coming days as many victims remain buried under the rubble.

"More than 6,782 houses were destroyed in the earthquake, leaving thousands of people homeless and living in harsh conditions. Hospitals are overwhelmed with patients with serious injuries, many of whom require urgent surgery and intensive medical care," WHO said.
