Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School (District 1), previously (before 2023, it was Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School), was the first unit to organize the 6th grade exam in Ho Chi Minh City. This year, the exam attracted 4,851 students to take the exam at 7 exam locations to compete for 350 places, the competition ratio was about 1/14. This is also the highest competition ratio in the past 21 years and is the reason why many parents have their children practice for the exam early to be competitive.
At the Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School exam site, Ms. Hoang Yen, a resident of Binh Thanh District, said that her daughter had been studying since the end of 2024 at a center to prepare for the Tran Dai Nghia School 6th grade entrance exam. At home, her daughter also regularly practices the real exam structure and she will time her to help her practice time management skills. "I time each part so that my child gets used to the pressure of the real exam," the female parent said.
Ms. Yen added that since grade 2, her child has been exposed to logical thinking math, because this is an important content in the test, as well as to make her child feel that math is a practical, lively subject instead of just stopping at dry formulas. The cost for the math test preparation center is about 2 million VND/month, in addition, her child also practices English at this center after letting her child quit a previous "just for fun" center.
As for the natural sciences and social sciences subjects in the survey, she guided her child to self-study according to the 5th grade program and proactively look up more information online.

Giving her child early guidance from grade 3, Ms. Anh Thu, living in Binh Thanh District, assessed Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School as a good learning environment, so she decided to let her child practice math at a center in grade 4 because "this subject is difficult". In grade 5, she registered her child to practice literature and English combined with extra review at home. "On average, I invest about 600,000 - 700,000 VND/month for each subject," Ms. Thu shared.
Vy, a student at Vo Thi Sau Primary School (District 12), said she also started preparing for all subjects to enter Tran Dai Nghia School since grade 4. Every week, she would study 2 sessions during the week, until grade 5, the teacher opened an additional session on the weekend. "Each session, I studied from 5pm to 8pm, and had extra tutoring from 1pm to 2pm," Vy said. "I found math very difficult, English a bit difficult, but literature easy." "I'm not worried about the exam at all," Vy said.
Similarly, Hoang Cong Anh, a student at Vinschool Central Park Primary, Secondary and High School (Binh Thanh District), said that he also started preparing for the entrance exam to Tran Dai Nghia School in the summer from grade 4 to grade 5. "I studied very hard, in 2-3 places at the same time, including a few places where I studied both math and English. During that time, my mother did not let me go anywhere, I just stayed at home, finished my homework, played, played a little bit, then did my homework again," Cong Anh said.
The male student said that in the exam, he had difficulty with literature because he had to think of ideas to write, and with history because he did not remember some of the content clearly. As for the other subjects, the male student expressed confidence that he would do well. "I woke up feeling refreshed today, but then I felt a little scared," Cong Anh confided.
