Death hole appears after floods in China

VnExpressVnExpress04/08/2023

A giant sinkhole appeared near an apartment building in Hebei province, after floodwaters collapsed the basement.

"Since yesterday, water has been flowing down the hole. I don't know what's going on in the building now," CCTV quoted Ms. Trieu, a resident trapped in an apartment building near a giant sinkhole in Zhuozhou City, Hebei Province, as saying on August 3.

"Floodwaters are continuously entering my building. Our area has been cut off from electricity, water, and gas. Please help us get out," the woman said.

Zhuozhou, a city in Hebei province near Beijing with a population of 600,000, was the hardest hit in Hebei province by flooding after Typhoon Doksuri hit China. Heavy rains caused rivers to swell, collapsing bridges and submerging roads and vehicles.

Television footage showed rescue workers using boats, helicopters and excavators to rescue trapped people from heavily flooded areas in Zhuozhou.

Hebei provincial authorities have raised the emergency response level from level 3 to level 2 due to widespread flooding caused by heavy rain. So far, about 100,000 people in Zhuozhou city have been evacuated.

After Typhoon Doksuri made landfall in southern China on July 28 and moved north, Beijing received a record-breaking rainfall, while Hebei received more rain than it had in the entire year. Floods killed 11 people in Beijing and nine in Hebei.
