The Cheo play “General Vo Nguyen Giap” is a special and dedicated work of the screenwriter, Dr. Nguyen Dang Chuong; Cheo adaptation and staging director - People's Artist Trinh Thuy Mui; Art direction - People's Artist Tu Long. As a key program of the Television Stage, the play expresses the affection and gratitude of artists and people nationwide to General Vo Nguyen Giap, an excellent student of President Ho Chi Minh , the eldest brother of the Vietnam People's Army.

Through the form of Cheo theater, a unique traditional art form of the nation, the play vividly recreates the image of General Vo Nguyen Giap, not only as an outstanding general but also as an ordinary person, full of emotions, love for the country, family and comrades. The program has an impressive combination of traditional theater art and modern television technology, contributing to bringing the artistic heritage closer to the contemporary audience, especially the young generation.
The Cheo play "General Vo Nguyen Giap" is a typical work of art staged by the Army Cheo Theater and first performed in August 2024, on the occasion of the 113th anniversary of General Vo Nguyen Giap's birth and towards the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army. The Cheo play is staged based on the context of the historic Dien Bien Phu campaign, recreating the 56 days and nights of steadfast and arduous fighting of our army and people, prominently depicting the image of General Vo Nguyen Giap, especially focusing on the important decision when the General changed tactics from "fight fast, win fast" to "fight steady, advance steady".
This was a difficult decision in the context of a complex and arduous battlefield and campaign preparation, requiring intelligence, talent, decisiveness, and the ability to analyze and assess the situation of the commander, but it was also the starting point and momentum for the final victory.

“General Vo Nguyen Giap” is a large play, mobilizing many actors from the Army Cheo Theater, and is also a play with many characters, including the roles of leaders, leaders of the Party, State and generals of the Vietnam People's Army and French colonial generals commanding French troops in Indochina and the Dien Bien Phu battlefield.
Director Trinh Thuy Mui and the staging team brought to the stage the vast battlefield space with impressive stage designs, generalized and symbolic, interspersed with heroic scenes and lyrical, emotional moments. The highlight was the inner narrative before the General-Commander-in-Chief of the campaign made the historic decision to change the fighting style to ensure victory and minimize casualties of officers and soldiers as instructed by President Ho Chi Minh.

Besides, there are profound scenes such as the daily life of the General's family, the General's confidences with his wife Dang Bich Ha, the scene of visiting wounded soldiers, bidding farewell to martyrs with a touching lullaby, or the love story between the female worker Lieu and the hero To Vinh Dien before their sacrifice.
According to Director-People's Artist Trinh Thuy Mui, the biggest challenge in staging the play was to highlight the humanity in the behavior and decisions of General Vo Nguyen Giap. The director chose to restrain stage techniques, focusing on lyrical scenes to touch the audience's emotions, such as the scene where the General visits wounded soldiers, without dialogue, only acting with eyes and silence, bringing the most emotions to the audience.
The vitality of the play “General Vo Nguyen Giap” by the Army Cheo Theater is proven through the affection of audiences of all ages, especially students and veterans, and is one of the most complete works on the subject of the people's General, balancing emotions, events and traditional materials. The play is not only artistically successful when winning the Gold Medal at the Hanoi Open Theater Festival in 2024, but also has profound educational significance, spreading patriotism and love of national art to the younger generation.
