In the latest Power On report, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman said that the new system will begin rolling out widely in Apple stores in the US in April and cover all US stores by “early summer.” The process has been tested in select Apple stores since late 2023.

Gurman first reported on the system in October 2023, and it was noted in the iOS 17.2 update. The technology centers on a “pad-like device that stores can place iPhone boxes on.” The system can power on the phone, update its software, and then power it back off again without opening the box.

Gurman said the system could use MagSafe and other wireless technologies to power up an iPhone without opening the case. It would then download and install new software before powering off the phone.

The change means that people who buy new iPhones from the Apple Store may not have to update their devices immediately after taking them out of the box. Instead, the Apple Store will update devices when new versions of iOS are released.

Currently, iPhones ship from the factory with whatever version of iOS is available at the time. This means that millions of iPhones are running a fairly old version of iOS when they reach customers.
