“It's not where we come from, it's where we're going.”
This quote is printed solemnly at the entrance to the Gondomar SC Academy, accompanied by a photo of Diogo Jota in the shirt of the team he played for throughout his youth.
Right next to it is another photo of him in the Portuguese national team jersey. And true to the will expressed in his speech, Jota has gone to the place every young man dreams of pursuing the round ball.
Since 2022, the academy has been renamed Diogo Jota Academy to honor the talented son.
The above quote is also Jota's words, speaking after scoring a brace against Sweden in a 3-0 win at the UEFA Nations League 2020, fully reflecting his spirit and mindset in life.
Jota has just passed away after a car accident in Spain, at the age of 28.
He spent most of his childhood in his hometown, playing for a third-division team for €20 a month, while being repeatedly rejected by big clubs due to his small stature. But he never gave up.
From Gondomar, Jota went on to Pacos de Ferreira, then Porto, Wolverhampton and finally Liverpool. He became a symbol of ambition, showing that it is possible to reach the top despite a bumpy start.
The first teacher to see "Ronaldo's successor"
When Jota first started making waves at Pacos, coach Jorge Simao claimed he would be Cristiano Ronaldo’s successor. Even though Jota was surprised, he told himself: “If he believes in it, why can’t I?”
Jota is a rare case among Portuguese players who have not been through any of the big academies like Benfica, Sporting or Porto. But what makes him different is not his background, but his mindset and discipline.
“He gets through every situation with a very quick reaction. He understands what it takes to be a professional, a good person,” said Gilberto Andrade, former youth soccer coordinator at Pacos.
Andrade said success often makes many players get carried away by fame and money, but Jota is not like that. He is always disciplined, intelligent, humble and knows how to help others.
Different thinking from the beginning
The fact that Jota approached Andrade and said, “I want to learn a foreign language. One day I will play abroad and I need to be ready” shows that the boy always knew where he was headed.
Instead of relaxing or having fun after training, Jota diligently studied the language to prepare for the future. Later, when he realized that the audio courses were not enough, he took the initiative to find a tutor.
“He was different. He had a vision and he was proactive in preparing for a journey that no one would have believed he could go that far,” Andrade recalls.
Jota faced career-ending fears when he was diagnosed with a heart condition during pre-season testing in 2014–15.
He was banned from training for almost a month. But even then, he kept his cool and lived day by day.
Never leave your roots
Having established himself as one of the brightest young talents in the Portuguese league, Jota insisted on living in a dormitory with the other young players and going on trials.
He is the only one in the first team who chooses to live like that.
“He wouldn't leave his room. He was focused on his work, he had no time for distractions,” Andrade said.
Jota always knows where he is going and above all, he understands that the journey is more important than the starting point.
He turned a difficult path into an inspirational story – from Gondomar to Liverpool, from overlooked boy to national hero.
A beautiful journey and also full of regrets when it stopped too soon.
