On the afternoon of July 27, thousands of people in the communes downstream of the Ban Ve hydroelectric plant in Nghe An fled to the mountains in a state of panic due to rumors that the hydroelectric dam had broken.
Mr. Ta Huu Hung, Director of Ban Ve Hydropower Plant, said that he received false rumors that caused people to flee to the mountains. That same afternoon, he and leaders of Yen Na Commune, Nghe An Province went to Ban Ve Hydropower Plant to broadcast live to the people about the situation of the dam.
Mr. Hung confirmed that the rumor was baseless. "To stabilize the situation, the commune leaders and I went to the hydroelectric reservoir to record live images to reassure the people. After learning that the dam break was fake news, the people returned home. Currently, the reservoir is operating safely," Mr. Hung said.
According to the factory representative, in recent days, the unit has always closely coordinated with local authorities and specialized agencies in regulating reservoirs, responding to floods, and regularly monitoring and checking the status of the project 24/7.
"In the past few days, people in mountainous communes in Nghe An have been very tired because of the severe floods. This afternoon, there was a rumor that the dam had broken, causing people to panic and flee. I hope that the authorities will investigate and punish those who spread false information," said Mr. Ta Huu Hung.
The director of Ban Ve Hydropower Plant also requested that people not share or disseminate unverified information to avoid causing panic and affecting local security and order. All official information related to the operation of Ban Ve Hydropower Plant will be updated through official press agencies, authorities and local information systems.
