At around 5:30 p.m. on July 30, Nguyen Thanh Tung, 35, a resident of Truong Vinh Ward, and his 6-year-old daughter went to play at Xuan Thanh Beach Resort , Tien Dien Commune, Ha Tinh Province. The two of them wore life jackets and rowed a kayak over 3 meters long and nearly 1.5 meters wide out to sea to play, but were swept away by the waves and lost contact.
Receiving the missing information at 8:15 p.m. the same day, Lach Ken Border Guard Station (Ha Tinh Province Military Command) mobilized 12 officers, soldiers and fishermen to search all night, but to no avail. Authorities determined that the two victims were swept away by waves to Mat Island area, more than 30 km from the initial accident location.
At 6:30 a.m. today, the VINASINE 555 transport ship was traveling from Ninh Binh to Quang Ngai. When it approached Mat Island, it discovered Mr. Tung and his daughter clinging to a kayak. The ship approached and dropped life buoys to bring the two victims aboard.
From the time Tung and his son lost contact until they were rescued, it was about 13 hours. Both are currently in stable health. Authorities are sending ships to the waters of Thach Kim commune, Ha Tinh province to pick up the victims.
