Preserving the traditional bamboo and rattan weaving profession

For generations, the image of bamboo has been associated with Vietnamese villages, especially in the eastern countryside of Dak Lak. Green bamboo clusters are not only cultural symbols but also valuable raw materials for traditional craft villages, including bamboo and rattan weaving villages.

In Tuy An Bac commune, the bamboo and rattan weaving craft is not only passed down but is also gradually developing, becoming a new direction for the rural economy . One of the typical bright spots in the restoration and development of the bamboo and rattan weaving craft in Tuy An Bac is Cuong Thinh Bamboo and Rattan Establishment, founded by Ms. Bui Thi Minh Nguyet.

Ms. Bui Thi Minh Nguyet said: “Starting from a family tradition, in 2022, my family decided to expand production scale, apply digital technology to sell online, and reach customers nationwide. In addition, we also offer products in provinces and cities nationwide through trade fairs, display, and promote products so that more people know and use them instead of plastic products or materials that are difficult to decompose.”

In 2023, Ms. Nguyet's facility registered to participate in the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program with 8 products meeting 3-star standards such as: basket sets, baskets, sieves, trays, shoulder poles, shelves, winnowing trays, etc. Up to now, Cuong Thinh Bamboo and Rattan Facility has developed more than 20 handmade product models, creating regular jobs for more than 15 workers.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, a local worker, shared: “I am happy that from a simple product serving the daily life of local people, now rattan and bamboo products have stepped out of the village to all parts of the country. Thanks to that, the income of the villagers has also increased compared to before.”

Keeping up with the trend of green and environmentally friendly consumption, Cuong Thinh Bamboo and Rattan Factory constantly innovates designs, researches more product lines such as tea trays, cups, shelves, egg beaters, kitchen utensils, decorations... These products are not only highly applicable but also enhance the aesthetics of living spaces, meeting the tastes of consumers. Currently, each month, Cuong Thinh Bamboo and Rattan Factory regularly supplies about 200 products to domestic and foreign markets such as Khanh Hoa, Da Nang, Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City...

Cuong Thinh Bamboo and Rattan Facility supports job creation for many local workers.

Although the bamboo and rattan weaving profession in Tuy An Bac commune is undergoing positive changes, those who are attached to the profession still cannot help but worry about the future. One of the biggest concerns is the shortage of the next generation of craftsmen, as young people are less interested in the craft, which requires meticulousness and patience.

In 2024, Cuong Thinh Bamboo and Rattan products were honored to be in the Top 5 products awarded the Certificate of typical rural industrial products in the Central Highlands - Central region.

Mr. Bui Minh, a skilled craftsman in the locality, confided: “I and many older people here always try to learn and update new designs so that the products become more sophisticated and beautiful. For us, the bamboo and rattan craft is not only a livelihood but also a cultural pride. We want to pass on the craft to the younger generation, but to follow this profession, the weavers must be truly persistent and love the craft. I am afraid that one day, when older craftsmen like me are no longer around, there will be no one to continue this traditional craft in the locality.”

Mr. Luu Manh Hung, who is working at Cuong Thinh Bamboo and Rattan Facility, also expressed: “My family has been making bamboo and rattan for generations, but now none of our descendants are following in this profession. I am very concerned about whether anyone will continue to preserve the traditional profession in the future. Because losing the profession means losing a part of the soul of the homeland.”

According to Mr. Huynh Ngoc Han, Chairman of Tuy An Bac Commune People's Committee, bamboo and rattan weaving is not only a source of livelihood but also a part of the local cultural heritage. The commune government always pays attention to and creates conditions for households to expand production, access capital, participate in the OCOP program, promote trade and connect product consumption. In the near future, the commune will create conditions for Cuong Thinh Bamboo and Rattan Establishment to develop more OCOP products, coordinate to open vocational training classes to attract local youth to participate, in order to preserve and develop traditional occupations.

Preserving the craft is preserving the soul of the homeland, preserving a part of Vietnamese cultural identity. The bamboo and rattan weavers in Tuy An Bac are quietly continuing to write a beautiful story about love for the craft and the desire to bring the traditional craft far and wide...
